That’s great news! My D wanted to go to Pitt, but she received no merit aid. She actually wanted to fly down there to demonstrate her passion, but they told her that there was nothing they could do. She’s disapponted, but I know she’ll be happy at the NY state school that she’ll be attending.

How did you find out about the new merit aid?

He received a letter in the mail yesterday. Totally surprised us as we were not expecting anything. Since we are in state we assumed they weren’t going to be offering any more money. Needless to say this now may make the decision more difficult. Son thought he was down to Pitt and Richmond and they both were at the same net price. Two totally different schools, different areas, different sizes and totally different “feels”.

We were in Pittsburgh last weekend for UHC Admitted Students and we go back to visit Richmond next week. I am so ready for this all to be over. :)

Could be that someone who was offered Merit Money decided to go elsewhere and informed Pitt. That opened up the money to be given to your S.

Did you go to the open forum in Alumni Hall on Friday morning by any chance? I was sitting at a table for one of our publications (Three Rivers Review). Ha ha.

Awesome, we were in the room only briefly. I wish I had known that you were there I would have looked for you. Although I am not a big poster, I am a big lurker and a fan and I am grateful for your wonderfully informative posts. Thank you for all your thoughtful comments and information. I wish you much success in the future.

By emailing around, I was able to get my application reconsidered for engineering, and I got in! Like my first acceptance letter, this one said “Your admission file will also be reviewed by the Scholarship Commitee…”, if this actually happens, I may have a shot at an engineering scholarship!?

I wasn’t totally sure I would get in especially when I got this email:

"You can potentially request that your application be reconsidered for the School of Engineering. To do that, you would simply email your request to Brooke Simpson at bls82@pitt.edu. Your application would then be reviewed for the Engineering program and a new admissions decision would be sent to you. Be aware that at this late point in the process, admission to the Engineering program is extremely competitive, so I would highly recommend requesting that reconsideration quickly and sending your strongest scores and grades to us ASAP. "

I got this one from Brooke:

“We understand that you are interested in requesting reconsideration of your application for admission to the Pittsburgh campus of the University of Pittsburgh. Thank you for your correspondence. Please be advised that we have received your request and your file will be sent to the admissions committee for a re-review. Once a final decision has been made, you will be notified via regular mail. Should you have further questions in the meantime, please let us know. Thank you and Good Luck!”

Just thought I’d update the situation and maybe help future applicants. BTW @AwesomePossum, it’s possible that I saw you at UHC admitted students day, not in the morning though because I came late.

Yes!! My Daughter just got a letter in today’s mail. $10k/year for 4 years.
Like you I consider this strange to be getting this notification so late.
We had closed the book on Pitt.
Daughter accepted and deposited @ Buffalo (PharmD, Honors)

This might cause some turmoil. Pitt still significantly more $ than Buffalo but not entirely out of reach.

I believe that Pitt has allotted so many Full Tuitions, and different levels of merit awards. But as kids make their decisions and notify Pitt of their non-attendance, Pitt may offer that merit scholarship to another deserving person if numerous kids have declined. This happens at numerous schools. And with kids applying to more and more schools, it’s getting increasingly harder for schools to pinpoint exactly who will accept and who will decline their merit offers.

I received the Helen Faison full ride scholarship to PITT! I am an in-state Pre-med/biology major. I have an SAT of 1310/1600 and ACT of 30/36. I sent in a personal essay and two letters of recommendation, in case anyone was wondering. For future applicants to Pitt, my best recommendation would be to apply EARLY! Those that I knew who received full-tuition and full-ride scholarships that I knew applied early to mid September and found out early to mid October, so don’t delay!

I received notice of a $10,000 merit award from Pitt last Friday. Unfortunately, I put down a deposit at my first choice school, which was significantly more expensive school, four days earlier. I had no idea Pitt would wait until this late to offer scholarships. Pitt was my #2 choice but with this money, it would have become #1. I really want to go to my #1 choice and since the deposit is already put down, my parents are going along with it, but they are pretty unhappy!

You can always put your deposit at Pitt (the deadline is still May 1) and contact your other school. Explain what happened, say you’re sorry, but that you will not in fact be enrolling at the school. The deposit was just that-- a placeholder for your seat. Yes you forfeit the deposit, but it seems like you’re talking about $300-$400 verse a LOT more in savings at Pitt.

If I have a 1550-1600 for the M+CR components of the SAT but only a ~97 weighted GPA (school doesn’t calculate unweighted) and top 20% rank do I stand a chance of getting full tuition or does my horrendous rank basically disqualify me? How about 10k?
