I got my invite today, and I will be attending. Who else is going?

congrats! i'm hosting one of you guys that weekend. we honors kids are looking forward to having you all on campus.

I was also invited and will be attending. However, I know little about the program. How many finalists are chosen to receive the scholarship?

The only one I know about is the one given in the school of arts and sciences. Nine of the fifty finalists receive the full-tuition scholarship.

s'vrone, I'm going too! Where are you from? I'm from Paducah, KY. When I first got the letter, I couldn't believe it.

When is scholarship weekend?

I hail from Chattanooga, TN. Scholarship "weekend" is from Sunday, March 19th to Tuesday, March 21st.

Does anyone have any about how many of the fifty arts and sciences finalists receive some sort of scholarship? I know nine of them receive full tuition, but Vanderbilt awards a lot of 3/4 tuition and 1/2 tuition scholarships, I've heard.

I got one for engineering. It is on March 19-20, but it said that if I decide to attend Vandy I would be given a full tuition scholarship. It seems like engineering is much easier than arts and sciences. Good luck to all of you.

btw, What are the advantages of the honors program?

you get two study rooms on card access that are only open for college scholars. they are the BEST for hardcore studying (not to mention one of the rooms has a random shower in the bathroom...do we stink?!?) Also, probably the biggest benefit is taking honors classes. I think there are about six each semester and only the honors students get to take them. Right now I'm taking one called Mad Cow, Alzheimer's and Other Amyloidoses and it's pretty sweet. There are basically 15 of the smartest people here in the class with a professor who is excited to teach honors students. Judging from my own experience, it's really laid back but intellectually stimulating all the same. Lastly, if you get 15 honors "points" you'll graduate with honors, which looks good on grad school apps!

***This is in regards to A&S honors program - I'm not familiar with the engineering one.

About how many scholarships are awarded, I'm not too sure. I know if you get selected as a college scholar for first semester you for sure get a 1/2 tuition (I actually think everyone gets at least 3/4 tuition, but I'm not sure). People selected as college scholars second semester don't get any merit money, so I don't think that beyond the original 30-40 scholarships that Vandy gives out much more unless its for special scholarships (like Lanier scholarship, etc.), although I could be way off.

I'm hosting an engineering scholar, so ask me if you guys have any questions about the trip or anything (I also hosted last year, and was hosted the year before that).

evil_robot ~ It's great to hear from you! I haven't seen a post of yours in a long time. Son is waiting for a decision from Vanderbilt now (Engineering). I have no idea if he will get a chance at the scholarship weekend, but it would be great if you could add any thoughts or perceptions you have about Vandy to the board, including your experience at the scholaraship weekend two years ago.

My daughter will be hosting someone over the scholarship weekend if she cleans her room. She's one who was NOT invited to scholarship weekend last year (and pretty much wrote off being able to go to Vanderbilt at that point), but received a letter naming her a College Scholar in late March, with an accompanying generous scholarship making it possible to attend. So even if you're not invited, you may still receive significant merit aid.

I found some interesting stuff about Vanderbilt merit aid in their common data set: http://virg.vanderbilt.edu/VIRG/Nav_options/menu_cds.asp?expand_id=1
Last year more than 230 freshmen were awarded some kind of non-need based aid. Vandy has many scholarships, of course, including a minimum renewable $5K for NMFs who aren't receiving other merit aid. For those reading this thread who didn't receive that wonderful invitation - don't give up hoping for a scholarship yet!

Agreed. I didn't get invited to the weekend last year but still got a nice scholarship. If I am in town that weekend (might be at the NCAA Tournament), I'll hopefully be hosting someone as well.

frazzled1 & gman225 ~ Thank you for those posts! Apparently no invitation is winging its way to S, so it's good to know that there is always hope in March!

I second reasonabledad's thanks! No invite here in Dallas either but hope springs eternal, huh? Glad to know there's still a shot.

Would someone please explain what this weekend is about anyway? Are there interviews? If someone was accepted ED, would Vandy bother to "woo" someone who has already agreed to attend? I guess that would be a waste of money huh? Has anyone accepted ED received a scholarship invite?

Just curious...

Are these only for early decision acceptees? Or regular decision acceptees/potentional acceptees who will get a scholarship? I'm really confused.

I didn't fill out the FAFSA or the CSSProfile or any other financial aid forms because from my parents' income I figured that it would be pointless. Will this hurt me?

The scholarship weekend is for regular decision applicants (not sure if EDers are included, although I can't seem to think of anyone right now who did ED and got one).

Not filling out financial aid forms will not hurt you. These are based on merit alone.

Even if you didn't get invited to the scholarship weekend, there's still a chance that you'll get a letter in late March/early April awarding you a scholarship. From the people I've talked to, this actually seems to be more common (at least for those who ultimately decide to attend).

Thanks for the info slipstream99!
