I have recently been admitted into the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. I am an international student (UAE resident, India born).

With a SAT I score of 2330, (800 M, 800 W, 730 CR), SAT II score of 2380 (800 Math, 800 Chem, 780 Phy), straight A+ in all my academic years and a large bunch of National and International Level ECs, I was expecting a scholarship.

However, the mail I have received makes no mention of any scholarship.

I understand that there are few scholarships of International Students, but I believe my credentials should qualify me for at least some amount (even if small).

Will I get to know my scholarship (if it is there) later through another future email?
Is there a separate portal to check my scholarships?
Can I request for a scholarship now?

P.S: I have not applied for 'need-based scholarship'. I want a scholarship only based on my academic credentials.

@determined2300…Congratulations on an excellent academic resume!! I think you can reasonably expect to receive at least the Maroon Global Excellence Scholarship and possibly the Gold Global Excellence (half difference and full difference between resident and non-resident tuition respectively) and possibly some amount towards Undergraduate Research. Good Luck to you!!

Unfortunately, there’s no set timeframe for receiving scholarship notifications. It varies greatly from student to student. Some hear within a month or so of their admissions acceptance, but others don’t hear until closer to Spring.

My D found out she was accepted online then less then 2 weeks later, she received a letter from U of Minn with her merit scholarship award. She had a 30 ACT and 4.0 UW GPA. She received the scholarship that basicially waived the OOS tuition difference, so she is paying instate tuition if she attends.

Congrats to you too. Two weeks after my daughter found out online she was accepted, a large envelope arrived in the mail containing the scholarship letter and a certificate stating it was a “Gold” scholarship. I don’t think she received an email about this scholarship - just the letter in the mail.

Is there any point in emailing about the potential for scholarship? Kid did send in updated ACT (33, 34 math) but it seems CSE might just have really high stats all round? He has heard nothing about scholarships.

UMN-TC has 2 scholarships called ‘Gold.’ The ‘Gold National’ covers the OOS tuition differential. The ‘Gold Scholar’ is $11,000-$12,000/yr, which covers almost, but not quite, in-state tuition, exclusively for NMF (and possibly NAF, not certain.)

When people mention the Gold scholarship in these threads, it is often unclear which scholarship is being referred to. It is also possible to get both if OOS NMF and not from reciprocity state.

To late to edit. There is a 3rd ‘Gold’ scholarship, that is like the ‘Gold National’, but for internationals. It is called ‘Gold Global Excellence.’

@determined2300, congratulations to you!

@alfonsia, your S is likely to receive the ‘Gold National.’ It wouldn’t hurt to call and ask when to expect that. If you need more money than that, I don’t know what the potential is. Probably not going to get full tuition unless NMF, but I can’t know if your S is extraordinary in some way, so that they will throw money at him.

Also, admissions/scholarship/honors can be slow for some students and quick for others. Sometimes one can point to exceptionally strong stats as the reason, but not always.

My S received admissions/scholarships as soon as they started making decisions. I think that may be due to grades/NMF. Seems some combination of stats puts you in a wave through pile. I do know of NMFs with not-so-great stats in prior years who waited a long time to even hear of admission, much less scholarship/honors.

S’s original ACT was fine, but not great. He received a better score in October and submitted it. CSE just admitted him to honors 2 days ago. It takes them awhile to notice updates.

Thanks Celeste, with DS there isn’t anything especially sparkly,no NMF, I was just hoping for the something better than nothing option LOL. The gold would be flat out amazing to us. It seems from CC that the CSE stats are pretty high hitters so I don’t mean to sound entitled, I just am not sure how PC is is to nag at this point in the game LOL. Ds’s Oct score was sent in as the improvement of 1 comp but 4 math points.

@celesteroberts Is there any method to how they decide whose application is looked at when? Why some decisions are given in 2 weeks while others have to wait months? It makes sense if the stats are super high (2300+ SAT, etc), but I have seen folks with lower stats getting decisions much sooner than those with higher stats who’re waiting for much longer time. Do OOS and internationals get the last priority?

I’ve looked for a pattern and it seems unpredictable outside the highest stat students hearing fast, and that some schools, like nursing apparently take a longer time for their students. Maybe someone else knows more. We are OOS but reciprocity state.

My son was accepted within a few days of all his material being received. He soon after was accepted/invited into honors. He is a very high stats kid yet has heard nothing regarding scholarships.

I have convinced myself that he will get Gold National and that he hasn’t heard yet because he is being considered for more (and presume they send one package when decided). But if the larger award is restricted to NMF, then maybe I should be worried? He is not NMF although has much higher that cutoff scores on actual tests (SAT and ACT).

I had not considered contacting the school as it seemed a bit pushy, especially since he will not promise to enroll before comparing to other schools not heard from yet.
