My D just got a scholarship notice from UMN today but I think the application review is not done yet. There are 3 conditions: need to be National Merit Finalist, name UMN as top choice, and accepted by UMN. Do they just send this to all NMF contenders? What is the odd of not accepted after receiving that notice?

Odds are very, very high she will be accepted. NMF odds can be a little lower, you never know for sure until the end if she made it, of course. And be sure you understand the timing of when she would have to name them as first choice (if the scholarships are automatic, you usually have until May 1, but if they are competitive sometimes they want you to name them earlier).

I think that is how they do it for better applicants at least. That happened to D last year. Scholarship letter weeks before acceptance on app tracker showed. OTOH there was another NMSF at D’s school who was complaining in January that he hadn’t heard from them yet. He didn’t have best grades, didn’t make NMF. And another boy got accepted sometime in the fall, but the scholarship offer came later. They now enroll more NMF than they have scholarships. A couple years ago it was over 160 freshmen enrolled and they have about 125 scholarships to award, Thuy-Vi told me, so congrats!

Thanks. Thuy-Vi is also contact person for my D too.

I just found the application status has been updated with admission to college of science and engineering this morning. It said the admission package is on the way.

Congrats! Nice when the acceptances start coming in.

^^^ Thanks.
