My son was recently awarded this scholarship. It explains that he will receive 4300/year for 4 years . It also explains that it covers the cost difference between instate and out of state tuition. What happens when the tuition goes up (which it will)? Will the amount of scholarship money rise with the cost of tuition increase? I called admissions and did not get a good answer. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

hokiefan…Our D1 was awarded the same scholarship. Based on the fact that the scholarship page doesn’t show a defined $$ amount for this scholarship I asked admissions the same question and was told that it is “supposed” to increase in value if the difference between IS and OOS tuition changes. Admissions has been very straightforward with us throughout the whole process, so I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully tuition rates won’t change in the next 4 years (wishful thinking I know) and we won’t have to test the theory.

Wondering if U of Minn provides any departmental scholarships? Has anyone heard/received anything?

Hi Trinity…I know CBS offers several one-time $1K scholarships for incoming freshmen, but as of now D1 hasn’t heard anything regarding them yet. Not sure about the other colleges, but CBS lists theirs on their website. It’s possible that departmental scholarships might not be offered until the student confirms their admission? We’ll just wait and see.

Mother of a UM sophomore here. The Gold National amount did increase this year to reflect the increase in the difference between instate and OOS tuition. Don’t know about the future as MN, like many states, is in financial crisis. I’m sure that is why FA office is being less than clear, because they don’t know what the money will be like. The department scholarships arrive sometime after the the national scholarships and you don’t have to confirm admission to get them. In fact, we waited until the near end as we wanted to see if they sweetened the pot, which they did not. At admitted student event, man from FA said that if you got a national award and a dept. scholarship that you were extremely fortunate. BTW, if you get a dept. scholarship for four years and then you apply for another scholarship for upperclassmen as a sophomore, jr., etc., then your original scholarship will be canceled, so it only makes sense to do so if the new scholarship is for more. Many of the upper class scholarships are for one year only so you have to read the fine print. I would think that by the admitted student events that the scholarships would all be handed out, but if not you can talk to FA then.

^Thanks for the info Denquist!! It’s great to know that if the rates increase that at least part of the difference could be covered.

Have any in state kids received university scholarships notifications?

I was told by my admissions counselor at UMN that the Gold National will continue to adjust to match the OOS surcharge, at least for awardees this year. Take that for what it’s worth.

With states reeling under deficits, Universities are trying their best. So as you all mentioned, it looks like a long period of wait & see.

Thank you for the responses. I have an older daughter at a private that won a competitive scholarship (27,000/year) and we were told verbally in a face to face meeting with the regional rep that if she attended the school the scholarship would increase as the tuition did. So off she goes and everything is grand. Tuition bill comes for the second year and of course it is raised but the amount of scholarship is not. We call the school and talk to many, many people and are told the same thing. They NEVER give competitive scholarships that increase. The amount stays fixed. So we are stuck paying these increased costs every year that we really thought the school would pick up. Just a tale here for buyer beware.

That is the reason I am paying attention to wording and such on these scholarships. My son has been awarded scholarships from another school and it states clearly on the letter that the scholarship will increase if the tuition does for 4 years. Anyway, thanks for all your help. Good luck to all.

It seems as though only OOS students are receiving scholarship information; I wonder if it is to peak interest from high potential students like the many here.
To address one of the questions, tuition IS going to increase at a rate of around 4.4% per year for IS and 7.5% for OOS via [KSAX.com - U of M Approves Tuition Increase, Pay Cuts](http://ksax.com/article/stories/S1619353.shtml?cat=10230).

I just recieved another letter. So I’m guessing scholarships are offered on a rolling basis.

I officially got offered the Gold Scholar Award and Some Undergrad Research Scholarship. Minnesota is starting to look pretty sweet about now…

^^^^are you in state?

Nah I’m oos. I wish i was instate. There are so many scholarships for minnesota residents

Did you guys only get scholarship info after submitting the FAFSA, or did your merit come in before that?

@proculus I got two merit letters like a month apart (before FAFSA) My parents just submitted the Fafsa to now be considered for need+merit aid. Does anyone know when a finalized scholarship offer is made?

I received a letter today that said I would know by the end of March.

Okay that sounds like a good date. Thanks!

hey do i need to apply for any scholarships?

For incoming freshman, the university wide scholarship app is the same as the application app. But if you qualify for private ones, those require a separate one
