Thank you for the input ENsMom, do we suppose to receive this before getting informed for honor/scholarships? Do you know the interval of time? Thanks again.

And SteveC:

Yes, it’s a site to request further info to be considered for meeting certain criteria. Thank you SteveC.

Yes, my S got this e-mail. Didn’t have the exact text in front of me and wanted to make sure it was the same one before replying.

From what I read here, some scholarships are already being awarded. This e-mail is for college-specific (in my S’s case, College of Liberal Arts) scholarships, I think. I’m guessing they put together a complete package based on university- and college-level sources. I don’t know of any timeline, sorry.

Hi SteveC: I forgot to say that my son was accepted into College of Biological & Sciences two weeks ago, here is the exact email and we already emailed back the confirmation form:

Congratulations once again on your admission to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities!

In addition to the University’s competitive academic scholarships for which you are already being considered, a small number of scholarships funded by private donation are available to freshmen. These privately funded awards give preference to students who display strong academic performance and who meet certain criteria.

Please complete the Web form as soon as possible but no later than two weeks from today so we may consider you for any scholarships for which you may be eligible.

Thank you for your wish and best luck to your son too.

Do they look at 1st semester senior year grades?

What are the odds? (How many students get scholarships?)

Also, does anyone know about the Bentson scholarships specifically, because I am Jewish and that is one of the main scholarships I’m looking into.

Given that they’ve already sent out some scholarships I would guess mid-year grades are not a huge factor. Does the University of Minnesota even require a mid-year report?

Has anyone heard back from CFANS about scholarships yet? I heard back about my major and got in, but haven’t heard anything about scholarships. Just wondering if anyone has heard.

I found out about the research scholarship a week or two after I filled out the form, and received another (family) scholarship notification in the mail a month after that.

Son is a NMF and received the $10,000 Gold scholarship, the $5000 Bentson scholarship, and $1,000 NMF scholarship. As this is more than tuition, does anyone know if these can be used for room and board also or if the Gold and Bentson scholarship are only for tuition? I believe they can be used for everything but just want to double-check. (This is for S2. S1 is a sophomore at UMN but 2 years ago UMN only gave $7500 for NMF’s so with his $2500 Presidential Scholarship, these just covered tuition so the question never came up.)

kjcphmom - Congrats, last year we received the in state version your S’s scholarship. Yes, they apply the balance toward room and board. We are just about to write a check for his second semester balance…a big whopping $1100!!! Love it, love it, love it!

Kajon, thanks for the information. If S2 goes there, it would be very nice too. S1 costs about $10,000 per year and we are grateful for that. Last year we didn’t take the American Opportunity Credit for S1, but knowing that we can apply his scholarships to room and board, I am exploring to see if we can take it this year.

Kajon, does your S like UMN. Did he stay in Middlebrook or another dorm. S1 loved Middlebrook but hated the walk in the cold/miserable winter last year so I don’t know whether to recommend S2 to request Middlebrook (especially because of all the construction.) What do you think? Thanks.

He enjoys Middlebrook and has made some great friends. He never minded the cold - though this year it has been unusually warm. Against my better judgent
he is moving to an apartment (staying in West Bank) for next year. Scholarship $$ willthe go toward rent and he will still get at least one meal per day through UMN dining.

He really lives the school and the Honors program. He was also offered a freshman research grant which will look great on his grad school apps. I am sure these kids would be happy in any number of schools. Knowing that grad school is in his future and crying every time we pay S1’s $40,000 tuition bill, we feel we made the right choice for our family.

Kajon, thanks for the information…especially about the fact you can take the scholarship money and apply it to the rent as this was a question I had. Both of my boys were offered a research grant, but S1 did not pursue it…I hope S2 does. I think I will suggest S2 stay at Middlebrook as a freshman as they meet so many nice mind-like kids there. Good luck to your son in his apartment!

My son was accepted into CSE in late Oct but didn’t find out until today that he got into the Honors program! He got a modest scholarship of $5K for yr 1, $2K each year thereafter. Not stupendous, but nice nonetheless. Not sure what he’s going to do at this point because he’s still waiting to hear on aid from a few other schools. He has 6 AP classes, has been working very hard, and Tri 2 finals are this week. It was nice to get the call from the Honors program today - gave him a bit of a moral boost!
