I was awarded an Eliot scholarship in my initial financial aid package (i applied ed ii) and I was told that was based on need and merit. I was given about 26,000 for that. Then I was also told that I was given an Enterprise Rent-A-Car scholarship which was also supposedly based on merit (the same criteria as the Ervin) and need for others. Now I find out that I am an Ervin Finalist, so hopefully i can get even more money :-)

What do you think rejections from the SShips say about your chances at admission? I got rejected from the Medical University Scholars program too =[ doesn't look like WashU likes me very much!

I believe that Wash-U strategically, coldly, calculatingly uses their extensive merit scholarship programs to entice particular students to campus -- students that are certainly well-qualified for the awards, but also students who they truly believe will accept the award and attend Wash-U instead of other top schools. If you want to be a cynic about it, schools have X amount of dollars to throw into student recruiting -- Wash-U doesn't have big time athletics, they aren't exceptional in minority and income related diversity recruitment, and have institutionally chosen to use part of their incredibly large "warchest" to "buy" students with certain stats and areas of expertise. I'm not saying any of the above disparagingly, all schools don't have to have the same "plan." I simply believe you can't understand Wash-U without believing the above is their "plan" (or at least a major part of their plan).

How does this relate to your chances of admission? In my opinion, getting selected for a scholarship is so incredibly difficult (2-5%), that NOT getting selected does NOT mean they don't "like you." However, I do think Wash-U truly tries to get a "read" on applicants. If through their available data and evidence they believe you were only or mostly interested in them solely because of merit scholarship possibilities, then they may be unlikely to admit you, thinking you are not at all likely to attend and they've jacked up their admit rate and lowered their yield rate (big no-no's to Wash-U).

I might and could be totally wrong about all of the above, by the way. But, I've developed these thoughts after carefullly watching the admissions patterns over the past four years involving close to a hundred candidates, many of whom I know very well.

Good luck: GREAT school -- quirky (not wrong, just quirky) admission practices.

i just got notified that i wasn't made a finalist for the conway-proetz scholarship for art, will this affect my admissions at all?

I agree with dude that getting rejected for a sship doesn't mean that you are a weak applicant as the admissions rates are abysmally low. However, I don't think that WUSTL will look disfavorably upon sship applicants. First of all, many people apply for the sships. Many say that 1500 or so applied and it can't possibly be the same group of people. Secondly, I think that WUSTL is very understanding that kids want money. In meeting with my admissions officer, he seemed really down to earth and uncalculating of our ulterior motives. But, I could be totally wrong.

I showed a lot of interest by visiting and interviewing twice (one on campus and one alumni). I also met with the head of the Ervin scholarship when I went to visit and told her I was interested in the program. Also, the guy I roomed with when I went to visit was an Ervin scholar and I told he put in a good word for me. I'm sure all of this played a role in me becoming a finalist!

Got a letter. Didn't get it. Not surprised, really.

Nobody in my school was awarded a scholarship. This includes a Robertson finalist at Duke who applied, a Vanderbilt Scholar, and 2 emory scholar semi-finalist.
