Scholarships

Business letters are out as well; today I got a letter telling me I'm not a finalist

"...I regret to inform you that the Committee is unable to name you as a finalist...We have been overwhelmed by the amount of interest students have shown in the Dean's Scholarship this year...Nearly all of the students who applied for the scholarship presented outstading credentials..."

So I didn't get the Dean's Scholarship in business. Oh well :(.
Sorry for the sob story, I gotta release my steam somewhere, right?

Art letters out - not a finalist.

me either nugrad =(

danforth out...not a finalist

Earvin and Moog out... not a finalist. Wow, I didn't realize that these scholarships were that competitive. The acceptance rate is abysmally low. I thought I had a good shot with a 2290 SAT, strong ecs, and all. WashU is virtually off my list now, unless I get into USP.

Very true. Wash-U has many of these scholarships (full or 1/2 tuition), but the acceptance rate for each is typically in the 2-5% range. And keep in mind that the applicant pool for the scholarships typically consist of the strongest candidates for admissions, including many who are applying to Wash-U ONLY because of being enticed by the availability of merit scholarships (otherwise they are applying to Ivies and other top-10 unis and LACs). People get these scholarships ... you can't get one if you don't apply ... but nobody can expect to get one ... the odds are just so tough.

To answer some of the questions that have been raised about the scholarships:

I can't say for sure if this year's Ervin and Rodriguez scholarship selection process is the same as last year, but my son was a finalist for the Ervin Scholarship last year. He was notified by mail only, not by phone, that he was a finalist. Wash U made the travel arrangements and paid transportation--the weekend was at the very end of March/early April. I recall there were about 75 finalists last year--I think this was for the Ervin Scholarship alone, but it might have been for both. There was a lot of competition for about 10-12 awards. (I could be mistaken about that number but I seem to think it was something around there.)Shortly after the weekend, students who were granted full or partial scholarships were contacted by phone, and letters were later sent out to those who did not qualify. Hope this helps. Good luck to all :)

bandmom,
I believe that the approximate numbers for last year were as follows:
Danfort Nominated 900 Scholars 16
Rodriguez Applied 1,200 Scholars 25
Ervin Applied 1,500 Scholars 30

Some of the candidates applied for more than one of the above scholarships. Since not everyone that was offered a Scholars designation, decided to attend WashU, the actual number awarded for each program was higher than the numbers above.

Thanks, ST2, for the infomation. Maybe I was thinking that around 12 full tuition scholarships were to be given out for Ervin, but of course I don't recall for sure. Sounds like you are someone in the know, so thanks for the clarification.

to those of you who applied to the rodriguez scholarship program...
i didnt make the final round and i was only notified by a letter by mail, no e-mails, no calls. I received it this week, i think all of us should be hearing this week about them. Again, mine was a NO, but thats how i heard from them... apparently 1200 applied and I am certain that they offer very few scholarships... so thats it for WashU so far

What date was on the Danforth letters. I still have not received a letter yet. I am sure it is no though.

Does anyone know when you find out about Friends of Music?

I got my Ervin and Nemerov rejection letters this week. I seriously doubted anything for Ervin, but I had really hoped for Nemerov as I've always considered writing my forte. Nemerov had 300 applicants, 24 finalists. I had hoped I would have been at least a finalist, because unfortunately, that was the only way I would have been able to visit the school.

Though I will say the letter was VERY nice. It said "Your application was strong and it showed a deep committment to writing" (or something very close to that).

I've heard that the "rejectees" for WUSTL scholarships are often considered for other scholarships. When would we hear about these?

THANKS AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE FINALISTS!

I can see that we are in very good company. Bad news comes in threes I am told. Our son was rejected from Danforth, Ervin and Rodriguez. Very disappointed. The competition must be incredible. To those who were selected, congratulations. I am very impressed. Good luck to you. WashU is a great school, I wish you all the best.

Wait, there are other scholarships that you don't have to apply for?
Also, it is surprising that few-nobody on CC has gotten a scholarship offer. It seems that many CC people are the cream of the crop.

Is there any way that someone who didn't apply for a scholarhip (just regular application) could get some sort of merit aid? I know somebody who didn't apply for it, but got a half-tuition one. But this was like 6 years ago...

No; no merit scholarships are given besides those requiring applications. You may, however, receive need-based aid, as applicable.

D applied last year for 3 of the "major" scholarships but received none. She did, however, receive a Dean's Honorary Scholarship (merit based - engineering school) renewable for all 4 years. This scholarship was not listed on any of the FA information on the web site, etc. so it was a nice surprise to see it on her FA letter. After decisions came out a number of students reported receiving this award with amounts ranging from 6K - 9K per year for the 4 years. SO! Don't give up on merit aid just because you weren't awarded any of the highly publicized scholarships.

What do you think rejections from the SShips say about your chances at admission? I got rejected from the Medical University Scholars program too =[ doesn't look like WashU likes me very much!
