Scholarships

AFA,
I am sorry if I sounded sanctimonious to you, I certainly didn't want to be. :) For a person like my S, who wanted a large, nondenominational, urban school, Gonzaga was a WRONG choice( insert the quote from my previous post here). Therefore he didn't apply there. UW suited him much better, plus it was definitely affordable, FinAid or no FinAid, by reason of being a his State school. Even without scholarship money it would be. So I don't really understand the complaints. If you are an in-state student, yes, of course your state schools are financial safeties. :) The thing is, there is a number of options, with respect to finaid. WSU gives more merit money, UW gives less, it always had been like that. So to apply to a school like UW in hopes of merit windfall while not really liking the school itself seems like a waste of time to me( sorry if it sounds sunctimonious to you) . I also never tried to compare Harvard and UW in terms of aid, it would be wrong, bacause Harvard uses different methodology for calculating need and also is a "need only" school, there is no merit money at Harvard. And UW, while pretty stingy, does have a number of scholarships available for in-state students.

Just one question please, this girl at my school told me she got a $4700 from the UW her freshman year. She specifically said it was from the UW and not another source. Is this believable? Everyone else I"ve talked to haven't heard anything about scholarships. Is she just bluffing?

They still give out merit aid. I know a few people who don't have need and still got a few grand. I had about 13k in need and they gave me 12k. It is basically 6k based more on need and another 6k based more on merit. Even if no aid is given UW is a bargain for anyone instate. I like that they give more aid to those of us that need it.

I don't know about the specific numbers, but here is the link to the list of some merit scholarships UW gives.

Parabella, aren't those only for honors students? I know for a fact she did not apply to honors. Anyway, I was just wondering because she has a higher GPA than me, but she's only been taking regular classes her whole high school career. I took a lot more AP and honor classes with a slightly lower GPA, and it just seems really unfair that she would get something and I wouldn't.

seahawkcity: What exactly do you mean by "I had about 13k in need and they gave me 12k?" How did they "give" you all the money? Is it in terms of grants, loans, or scholarships? Thanks.

Did the girl said the money was a merit scholarship? Maybe she was talking about general FinAid?

I meant that the expected cost minus my EFC was a little over 13k. They gave me undergrad tuition exemption and a university scholarship which they later gave a name to. They were each 6,000. The rest was a student loan.

Guys could you please help me? I applied for my financial aid and some of you were talking about how UW has already prepared your financial aid packages and you can see it online? Where in myUW can I find it? And what does it say?

I don't know if they've already prepared my financial aid package because I filed the FAFSA on time (pretty early I would think) but they asked for my parents' tax returns and I just sent them last week. So they probably haven't finalized my award. But this is driving me really crazy. I just want to know where to find it online so I can know where to look when it does come. Thanks, guys.

^At the right of your MyUW page, there is a tab labeled as "Student." When you go there, scroll down to Student Personal Services, and click on Financial Aid Status.

Hope that helps! (:

Thank you very much tennis07. That really helped. UW gave me so many loans...so that means I'm definitely not going there. They met all my need all right, but I'm probably gonna be in debt for the rest of my life. Haha. My family's EFC is 116 (since I live in the Philippines we're pretty well off, but if you convert our income to USD, it doesn't look very good..haha). I'm hoping that UVA gives me a good financial aid award. I qualify for AccessUVA and hopefully they'll give me all grants, or they'll cap my loans to just around $5K. Hopefully.
