When do they give out scholarships?

i got one scholarship with my acceptance letter (in December), and another one about a month later (January)

My son was just notified of another scholarship from UConn (from engineering). Obviously, he is very happy.

However, it states that he needs to maintain a 3.4 gpa in order to keep the scholarship. This seems pretty high to me especially considering he will be taking Biomedical engineering and the curriculum is basically spelled out for him. Also, when he spoke to a student in engineering from UConn, the student said he will be taking 5 courses each semester because of his major.

Is this a hard gpa to attain? It seems that he would need to get mostly A's and a couple of B's in all science courses.
