Scholastic Art and Writing 2017

@NotAMathlete do you know what kind of recognition portfolio silver was given at Carnegie Hall ceremony last year
? It might be different for you because Gedenk Award, but maybe you know re portfolio silver?

yep, rip. emailed the az coordinator, nothing. website’s not updated nor is the affiliate page. so i guess it’s just a terribly stressful waiting game from here on out :frowning:

update: so they seem to have announced a date for the awards ceremony, but the 2017 winners haven’t been posted yet, i haven’t received any emails or anything (if you go on the affiliate page it still says 2016 winners notifications, though the bottom part about the awards ceremony has been updated to reflect the current year). kind of weird lol

I’m from AZ–when I log into my account, I’m eligible for SAS awards and I’m able to see a list of my works that received a gold or silver key, but I can’t find the actual awards list or see which key my works received @nephisto

@xlhx33 Check your regional site for a list of results? Mines had the same thing, so I had to go to the list of winners and ctrl+F to find my name.

@hope469 The AZ regional site hasn’t been updated yet  Last year’s winners are still up

@xlhx33 i logged into my account and it says im a gold or silver key recipient, but i don’t know how to see which of my works received the award(s). confused

wait, i see a list of works that won awards now, but i don’t know what kind (gold or silver key) of award i got for each one?

@nephisto yep, same for me–I guess the list of winners will probably go up soon on the regional website?

@nephisto @xlhx33 I’m in the same boat with my region. It’s pretty nerve-wracking knowing I won something but not knowing what.

@Lea111 Portfolio silver is just awarded a silver metal. Portfolio silver with distinction receives a silver medal with a silver ribbon. Gold receives a gold medal with a gold ribbon and those recipients are invited on stage.

There was some confusion last year as to who would get to go on stage. Basically, if you receive a portfolio gold or a sponsored award you are invited on stage and are also asked to attend a reception afterwards where you meet your sponsors, Scholastic CEO, etc.

Depending on your sponsor you may also be asked to do an interview and/or write blog posts or testimonials.

Thanks, @NotAMathlete . So sounds like Silver Medal with Distinction for Portfolio not on stage, and nothing else special for them (other than $5000!!)? (Trying to figure odds we will need to travel that week. DD has already been to Carnegie Hall for individual piece Gold Medal, and probably would not go again if it would all be the same as last time, as it’s a very inconvenient time for us.)

@Lea111 Silver with distinction receives a $1,000 award I believe (not $5,000). Both silver with distinction and gold are extremely competitive and very few are given these awards.

The dates were not convenient for my parents either so I took a train and stayed in NYC alone. (Depending on where you are from this may or may not be an option that you could consider)

Yep, you’re right. $1,000 for Silver with Distinction. Not sure why I thought $5,000, must be something else I’m thinking of, or some older award. I believe last year there were 8 Gold, 8 Silver with Distinction, and 14 Silver (for writing). The weekend activities themselves are very fun and inspiring, and I do recommend that any kid who is interested go, just for those, whatever the situation is about Carnegie Hall (which has changed every year).

rip idk what’s up with Arizona. They won’t even reply to emails (I sent them one a week ago!) this is really upsetting for me lol idk why

Also, for the SAS summer programs thing, is eligibility open only to select people (underprivileged, minorities etc) or am I eligible to apply as long as I got the questionnaire etc? Thanks!

I have a question, so on the Dashboard of my account, it says "Congratulations! This year we received more than 330,000 works. As a Gold or Silver Key recipient in 7-11 grade, you may qualify for a Scholastic Awards Summer Scholarship (SAS Scholarship) to attend a summer art or writing program. " However I did not receive any sort of letter saying that I won anything. What does this mean? How do I find out if I did/didn’t win something? My region’s site says that it will only send mail to gold key, silver key, and honorable mentions, and I didn’t receive mail. Could it be possible that they lost the mail?

Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but I am new to this. Thanks to anyone that replies!

@raventhemage That means you won, if you go to the tab named “Uploads” in that page, you can see which work(s) won a silver and/or gold key (but it won’t tell you which award you got, only that you did in fact receive a gold/silver key for the listed works, you’ll know what I mean when you click the tab). I haven’t received mail either but I’m assuming I won something because I submitted 4 works and 3 showed up as having won something (if I hadn’t I assume it would have been all/none). I don’t know about the mail thing, my region (Arizona) has said absolutely nothing about notification of winners so I have no idea. What region are you in?

@nephisto I’m in the Philadelphia art region, the affiliate website says “All notifications will be made by the end of January, 2017. Letters will be mailed to the students. We will only notify Gold key, Silver key, and Honorable-Mention awardees.” Maybe they just had slow shipping?

@raventhemage maybe, I would contact your coordinator
