Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2009

They gave it to you at 10:30? 0.o

You said literally.

^brianmo02, i think everyones times are different, cc just uses gmt time. like, right now, on my clock, its 11:15pm, not whatever time it will say :]

hmmm…i kinda wish they told everybody about nationals, so u don’t end up waiting to know when it’s already been revealed lol

^I KNOW! It’s nerve-wracking. I’m pretty doubtful that I’ll medal, however. My piece was good but not as good as some of the gold medal winners’ pieces.

Hey, though most people here seem just as confused as I am, I thought I’d share my experience thus far and see if I can answer some questions or get mine answered.

I got my gold key packet in the mail today, and it came in a big envelope. I got an award for a short story I submitted, but I also got a certificate for “general portfolio.” I thought they only selected a single piece from my portfolio to award… well, that’s what my teacher said. And I thought portfolios were usually given medals, too. Does this mean my whole portfolio is going to nationals, or is the key just for the item listed and the short story I submitted normally? Do they usually do that? =</p>

I also entered the novel contest. I have no idea when that’ll be coming back, but on the website (thisispush.com) they have a list of past winners, so if it seems to be taking a while, just check there, I guess!

I suppose national notification for general writing stuff comes in April? Unless anyone can say otherwise? Ahhh… more waiting.

I just received my packet in the mail today (i’m region at large).

Edit: i received a gold key for writing.

So are those who have been recieve packets talking about the writing portion or the art portion of Scholastics? I wish people would say which they’re talking about.

I just got mine for RAL Writing… I was a little disappointed though. The package only had a letter, certificate, and lapel pin mmhmm

to those who received RAL packages: where do you guys live? has anyone in texas heard yet?

and did your teachers receive the notification, or was it sent to your address?

yeah, i live in texas. i got mine in the mail today actually (for writing RAL). my teacher received notification on march 2.

the packet says we’ll receive notification about nationals on the third week of march. do you think they mean to say april?

I’m a Texan. This is actually the first time my teacher informed me beforehand. Usually I just get it in the mail in late March.

ok, thanks.

Regarding the National Awards-- there seems to be some inconsistency from Scholastic. The following is from the packet I received with my Gold Award. It was on the FAQ page:
"National award winners receive an email notification along with an award notification packet mailed to the students’ home addresses. Portfolio Award recipients in art writing are notified in mid-March, with instructions on how to leverage scholarships from the Alliance Scholarship Provider Network. Other award recipients are notified during the 3rd week of March. "
Then, this document, from a Scholastic region in Texas, says:
“National winners are notified in April.”

THEN there’s this, from the Miami-Dade Writing region (ignore the typo in the year-- this is from the 2009 submission guidelines):
“National Awards: Students and their teachers who earn additional awards on the national level will be notified by mail in late April. Students who are recognized on the national level will be listed on the Alliance Web site at [The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards](http://www.artandwriting.org) by September 2007. Due to the volume of manuscripts, only those students earning national awards will be notified.”

What can we conclude from this? That we can conclude nothing. I had previously thought I’d be hearing from Scholastic in early April, but now it’s totally up in the air. I think all we can really say is that we’ll know by June 4th (the date of the award ceremony…ha).
If anyone hears otherwise, or has the balls to email the program director, Alex Tapnio (I don’t-- already bugged him enough), let us all know? Thanks.

Congratulations to those who have heard. Does anyone know if San Francisco County’s letters have been sent for writing or art (the first round, not the nationals)?

Official release of the awards list on the website will be April 6th, according to Scholastic.

MiHa-- does it say that on Scholastic’s website? Where? Or did you call them?

I’m sorry to question you on this, I just don’t want to count down to April 6th unless there’s good cause. I feel like I’ve read so much different stuff on when they notify the winners…

Thanks! And sorry to be a pain!

You mean the gold key list will be posted April 6?

I’ve never got a package about my gold key for art…

Did you call them and ask if it was April 6th? It doesnt say that on the website, so I also want to make sure.

How can I possibly wait until April 6? >.<
