my school doesn’t do this either, but I plan to plop a copy of my short story on my english teachers’ desks. You will however need his/her signature eventually.

So the answer is yes, you need a teacher. Register yourself and get him/her to sign the sheet.

I won a national award last year, and the Carnegie Hall ceremony (along with the other activities Scholastic planned) was an amazing experience. I would definitely encourage everyone interested in art or writing to enter.

I’m not sure if I’ll enter this year, because a) I’m a senior, and if I were to win something I would find out long after college app deadlines, and b) there’s no way my parents would pay for the trip to New York again. But feel free to PM me if you guys have any questions about anything!

Oh, yeah, and I’ve decided on entering the Novel Writing, Personal Essay/Memoir, and Journalism categories. And maybe Short Story, Short Short Story, and Poetry. It’ll be amazing if I accomplish any of this, considering the crap load of homework I have every night.

Hmm, I think I’m going to enter a portfolio even though I’ve kind of sucked at this contest in the past. I’ve entered 2-3 works in the past two years, and only won one gold key per year-- each time for the submission I liked least. Oh well, third time’s the charm, maybe?

Bumping this topic as the deadline for RAL is closing in. To Lima, yes you can enter two or more for any category, I believe. A look at the past winners tells me that there are people who have performed such a feat by winning 2, 3, even 4 awards in the same category. Btw, finished Short story, short short story, and personal essays :)

Also, a question to anyone who many know the answer. Is there some formula Scholastics uses to calculate how many winners there will be for each category.

Oh, wow, I’m glad I ran into this thread. Maybe I can come up with some stuff before January 9. That’s the writing deadline for Los Angeles, California, right?

and does your submission have to be art-related? i have a personal statement i wrote for my Common App that was pretty good, can i submit that? and can we win scholarship money? i found their website but it’s really annoying trying to find information…

Okay, so I don’t know the exact link, but you can find the site if you go on Google and search for “Scholastic Art and Writing Awards”. You should find the official site. From there, it’s pretty self explanatory. Just register and print out the rules for whichever category you want to enter (art or writing, or both). The rules will tell you all the stuff you need to know. But just for clarification, after you register, you have to print out sign up sheets from their site and you have to get a signature from your teacher and your parents. There’s a fee for each entry. You can submit a piece of writing (or as many as you want) into any category (again, as many as you want). Some examples of the categories are humor, fantasy/sci-fi, short story, short short story. If you live in New York, the due date is January 16, 09 I believe. If you don’t, it’s January 9, 09.
