Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

I JUST GOT MY RESULTS. My teacher came into my second hour and said he just got the email a few minutes before (typing this from my third hour class’ computer). I won a Silver in my Dramatic Script and another award (I think an Honorable mention) in one of my other entries, but I was too busy flipping out over my silver to hear him right. I logged into my email and I still don’t see anything from scholastic, so I’m thinking that they just sent the results to the teachers.

Congrats Adam, yeah if you log into Scholastic it does not say anything (they are really slow to update)!

Congratulations Adam! That’s really awesome!

Also, I keep on forgetting to ask, but I have a question about the judging process. Does anyone know if they judge the work by grade groups? Are 9th and 10th judged separately from 11th and 12th?

To my knowledge high school and middle school are judged separately, but beyond that they are all judged together (though I could be wrong).

Ugh okay I’ll talk to my teacher then. Did he fwd your email?

Also congrats!!

does anybody when they notify the california region?

Hi! This is my second year with Scholastics. Last year, I won a gold key, regional for my flash fiction piece, but didn’t go any further. I submitted a bunnnnnch of pieces this year, poetry, flash fiction, memoir and short story, so I’m really excited for the results. I find out a week from tomorrow, the 31st. I’m from New York and from what past participants have told me, they’ve always been on time, last year, I received notification early! Congratulations Adam and Renover! I thought they quit doing the American Vision awards? Maybe just in my region, then.

Just wondering, do you guys participate in any other writing contests/awards?

I do some other local stuff occasionally, but at this point I care more about being in shows then winning awards (I don’t plan to go to college for art, but I am trying to build up my art resume for when I apply to college). Last year my work was in a fashion show as well, this year nothing major yet, though I am waiting to hear back from a local gallery currently. I go to a magnet school for the arts and it makes it 10 times harder to get into local things because of the competition.

The one nice thing about placing in my region is that it guarantees your work will be included in the local exhibition of winners.

Hi again yasminwrites! What do you mean that NY stopped doing American vision/voices awards? Do you mean NYC or the northeast region at large?

Hi Micky and Artsy!

That’s pretty cool. For my region, the writing gets posted on a blog and the artwork is shown at the awards ceremony.

I’m almost positive on the New York homepage for SA&W, it said that the American Visions/Voices awards have been discontinued. New York City, as Queens, Bronx, Manhattan plus Richmond and Kings counties, so not the region at large. Maybe I read it wrong but I think that’s what it said.

I’m in the NYC region too, but I don’t see anything about that on their homepage…

Maybe they had it up and then took it down?

I sent in two personal essay/memoirs, haven’t heard back yet. :)

So elated! My region just notified my teacher and I got a gold key in photography and a honorable mention in drawing!

Congrats to everyone else as well!

Good job, everybody!

I’ve been lurking this thread for a while… but I decided to make an account, so I could ask this question. Has anyone else here submitted work to the California region? I submitted a Personal Essay/Memoir (that I also put up to be considered for a New York Life Award) and I’ve been gnawing at the bit waiting for the results to see if I even placed regionally (not even thinking about the national awards yet). I’m seeing people talk about how they’ve been late in sending their emails before and in this case, the award ceremony for the California region is February 7th… and if I do win gold or silver in the regional awards, I would have to drive for 5 hours up towards San Francisco to get to where the ceremony is. It just sucks not knowing… ugh.

I’ve been searching for this year’s thread! Thanks, ArtsyGirl, for sending me the link, and congrats to everyone who’s heard so far!

I’m super nervous for this year’s result. I’m in the Northeast Region-At-Large so I should be hearing back from them on Thursday… hopefully they’re not late again. Is anyone else from this region? Last year I got a silver key for poetry, and this year I submitted a lot more (2 scifi, 1 humor, 3 poems), and I’m really hoping for a gold key.

I’m sort of confused by what American Voices is?

@Hannahrose09 - I submitted work to the California region as well! No word yet, though on their info page, they said they would notify at the end of January.

American Visions/American Voices awards are national awards given to the top five art/writing pieces in each of the five (?) regions. Works are nominated for these awards at the regional level, and the winners are chosen from the nominees at the national level.

I submitted a total of 6 pieces of writing this year (1 short story, 1 Science Fiction/Fantasy, 1 Humor, & 3 Poetry collections). It’s my first year competing, and I should hear results later next week!
Good luck to everyone!

I also submitted to the 2013 CA region scholastic art & writing awards and am anxiously waiting for the results! I submitted in poetry, short story, persuasive essay, and humor. I know that some states (Texas, MN, Delaware, among others) have already done their winner notification but haven’t heard anything about CA yet. Please let me know if anyone knows if the regional winner notification for CA has happened yet! I left a voicemail and sent an email to CaliforniaWrites but so far have got nothing back…

Submitted to the CA region of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2013 for poetry, humor, short story, and persuasive essay. Winner notification is supposed to happen at the “end of January” but so far I haven’t heard anything. Does anyone know if the CA region winner notification has happened yet?
