i’m seriously doubting the piece i have that won a gold key it sucks so much i think the person who judged it was drunk lol
Congrats to anyone who won an award, and good luck for national judging if you won a gold key! and if you didn’t win anything, there’s always next year~
@jxl637
Sameee! My poems were written like the night before because I remembered the deadline. I was so stuffed with projects n what not. And one of the poems was pure roast n cringe. The last one was about my frickin sneakers tf. Ran out of ideas dude.
And to people applying for SAS, are you also going to apply for the program again without the scholarship (going directly to apply for the specific programs)? And do you need to fill out EVERY single box in the Profile page? Like the boxes in the references section, like other family member or phone number of your educator.
@HopeTsai
I think you do cause I think the SAS application is like an app for the programs they are partnered with, right? And writing/art program apps require the same info too.
I mean, they all ask for any awards n whatnot, so I think a SAS app us like an upfront way to say, “Hey, I’m good.”
But I don’t know how prestigious gold/silver keys are.
And have you gotten a reply yet?
@HopeTsai
Ah! Found it! “Students do not apply for specific summer programs, instead they apply for a SAS Scholarship, and we work with our partners to place students into a program that will work best for them based on their availability, location, and interests.”
@AlmightySadist No, not yet. But I asked them around Friday or Saturday, so maybe they weren’t in the office? I’ve emailed them before, it took a week last time. And I was thinking about applying at the program and through SAS just in case, but I don’t know if that’s going overboard or something 'cause I’ve never done something like this before.
And for some reason whenever I update my student questionnaire it always goes to a blank page, like the one before the website loads, but it never shows that it has the new copy…
@HopeTsai I think it might be a little over? Cause the school is gonna review your work and have contact info either way.
And your student questionnaire keeps going blank? Have you tried accessing it on other computers?
@AlmightySadist Ah, ok! I was just worried that I might not get in, and I thought that applying sort of twice would give me two shots, but eh…I’ll just devote my entire time and attention and work into the SAS one.
And good idea, why didn’t I think about that!
No, it didn’t work. Guess I’ll email them again!
@HopeTsai
That is like… Extremely weird. I would definitely email. Could be a malfunction on their side. :-?
@HopeTsai
Omg! I forgot to ask! What awards did you win and what kind of stuff did you submit?
National results come out on Tuesday, March 14th! Good luck to everyone
@AlmightySadist Ah, I got 2 honorable mentions in sci-fi/fantasy, 1 in short story, 1 silver key in short story, and 1 gold key in poetry! ^^
@jxl637 Thanks! You too!
@HopeTsai
Wow… So many! Congratulations! I only submitted two entries and got awarded gold for one. What were your poem and short story about?
@AlmightySadist Thanks! Getting a gold key is crazy though, congrats to you too! What were yours about??
My short story was set in old times with the caste system and royalty and no technology whatsoever…It was basically a character driven piece, nothing really happened. xD I wanted to focus on how our society today places such an emphasis on having a unique talent to stand out (CC included!); I wanted to convey the opinion that hard work and enthusiasm for something, along with your personality, is what makes you you; it’s not about whether or not you invented the cure for cancer or made it to Carnegie Hall as a soloist, or anything like that.
My poetry was a collection of 4; one was about the little bits of racism against Asian-Americans in America, one was about life as a twin (how we’re separate people and not one entity), one was about my lost dog, and one was about first love. It was prose poetry (my favorite kind of poetry)!
@HopeTsai
Ooh. That sounds so cool! You definitely deserve your awards!
My losing entry was really just a joke. It was crap stuff that was a hit at my school because it was really funny but awful too.
My poems was a collection of 5 I think.
My first poem was about summer on farms and childhood memories.
The second one was about my lil’ love who never knew. XD
Third: Political disagreement
Fourth: Racism against natives but more of pride thing too
Fifth: Sneakers. And I tried to convey basic teen problems through them. (Ugh. Gross. XD)
@AlmightySadist
Thanks! Yours sound really interesting as well. ^^
Have you ever applied to these summer writing programs? It’s my first time through SAS, and I won with poetry and am submitting poetry as a recent work, so would it be somewhat weird if I put my first choice “genre” as, say, short story or something else?
