my school only does uw gpa and ranking, so i have a lower ranking then those people who have gotten the same grades, only in non-honors and non-ap classes. Is it okay to not put ranking on the apps? And if my school only gives uw gpa then can i calculate it to w and and put that on the app and check off the w box?

Probably not. You want the information you enter to be the same as your counselor’s (whose school report will include information on how your school calculates GPA and rank). Just enter your UW GPA and school rank. The colleges themselves will take into account your honors and AP courses; some may even calculate your weighted GPA on their own.

What type of school do you attend? The guidance counselor at our private school actually worked on this problem this year. The students taking honors and AP classes were at a disadvantage compared to public schools because the classes were not being weighted accordingly.
You can’t report your GPA as weighted but your counselor can work on informing the college of how rigorous your courses are in comparison to other schools. It’s important because a computer will do the “kicking aside” of lower GPAs. If the admissions office doesn’t know to look for you, you could end up in the “reject” pile because of GPA.

Don’t worry about it. You’re GPA is not actually a big deal in admissions, and it’s always judged in the context of your course rigor. Just be honest and put down your unweighted GPA/ranking.

As for automatic cutoffs, at top colleges those don’t exist. Their process is all about judging your performance relative to what’s available to you.

okay! thanks for the answers, guys. i go to a public school btw, but it doesnt weigh like other schools around the area

My school only had uw gpa; the colleges will understand your course load and take into account your school profile.
