Schools comparable to Duke (North Carolina)

Duke is perfect in every way, but... They have absolutely no majors I'm interested in.

I'm looking to go into public relations/communications/journalism, etc. I know I want to go into that area, not sure on specific major yet though. I love the location of Duke (more about that below), the size, it's private, everything.

I live in Iowa and am heading into my senior year of high school. I'm looking at colleges on the East Coast (mainly N/S Carolina and New York, although I'm flexible) because that's ultimately where I want to live when I'm older so that's a big factor. But Iowa/Illinois colleges are possibilities too. I got a 31 [eng- 33, science-24, math-30, reading-35] the first time I took the ACT and 1880 [590-cr, 630-m, 660-writing] the first time I took the SAT. Those were both in the beginning of junior year and I'm waiting to hear back scores from June tests. Those were kind of just to see what it was like, so I'm expecting the scores to go up.

I know this is a lot of information, but I hope it might help? Any ideas? All feedback is appreciated!

Northwestern

Which one? Any reasons why?
Thanks!

What do you mean “Which one?” There is only one Northwestern. It has a highly ranked journalism school.

Your test scores would have to improve for either school however.

Georgetown should be included amongst your choices along with USC. And while Duke may not have the specific major you’re looking for, definitely check out their certificate programs; they offer a journalism certificate, for example.

I understand my test scores are not the best. Again, I took them last fall (they’re meant for after youv’e completed junior year), plus I studied way more this time.

What does a certificate program entail?

What can your family afford?

University of North Carolina?

Georgetown.

Missouri? About $32,000 list price out of state.

Syracuse has a good journalism school.

Georgetown does not offer journalism/communications.

Check out the journalism programs at Northwestern, Syracuse, UNC-Chapel Hill, Missouri, Indiana, Florida, and Maryland.

Columbia only has grad Journalism–unless you’re referring to Mizzou.

USC, meaning University of South Carolina or University of Southern California?

For Missouir, Indiana, Florida, and Maryland, can you please specify? My searches are turning up multiple results! Thank you!

U of Southern Calif. but your SATs are probably too low for USC as well .

His ACT score is fine for USC though.

Some more top 10 (or thereabouts) undergraduate J-schools that might be attainable:

University of Maryland
University of Kansas
University of Georgia
Ohio University
Indiana University

Washington & Lee University in Virginia is a top LAC with undergrad journalism. Lehigh in PA also has journalism and beat Duke 75-70!!! Northwestern and UNC are the most Duke like with some of your interests. It is hard to imagine someone from Iowa would like College Park, Maryland.

Northwestern, Georgetown, and Boston College. All three have big sports scenes, mid-sized student bodies, solid academic reputations, and offer strong programs in at least one of the majors your interested in. Assuming you’re top 10% (~3.75+ GPA), your 31 ACT score will probably put NWU as a reach, GTown as a lower reach, and BC as a match. Best of luck.
