Schools for film production?

I am looking at schools for film production, but it has been slightly difficult because there are not that many that fall under my requirements. I would love to go to a traditional college (not an art school) and would like it to be in a larger urban city. Not NYU large, but not a “quaint” little town either.

So far my top ones are Chapman and University of Miami. Although I have a 3.0 :frowning: I feel that I would have a better chance in getting into Miami because Chapman’s film production program is very competitive. What are some other colleges that have a good film production major and aren’t incredibly out of my reach?

Hi, @Csgreen:

Northwestern, Emerson, BU, USC, UCLA, FSU, UT, Loyola Marymount, Syracuse, DePaul. . . . There are lots of traditional universities with outstanding film programs. Some are in sizable urban areas (LA, Chicago, Boston), some in medium sized urban locations (Tallahassee, Austin, Syracuse).

Here is the latest ranking per Hollywood Reporter:

Good luck!

The 3.0 might make it hard. Most of the colleges that mamelot posted have higher gpa requirements. For a 3.0, choices still could be
De Paul, cal state Univ north ridge, San Francisco state university. More reachy would be Chapman, Loyola Marymount university, Syracuse, Boston university.
Not sure the gpa requirements of Florida state Univ or central Florida university.

Test scores, state of residence? 3.0 would make merit aid very unlikely. What can you afford? A great creative resume could help.

University of Central Florida (located in Orlando) is not that expensive, even for OOS. My D2 has applied there for animation and is waiting to hear back. Because you aren’t admitted to the BFA track right away there is no portfolio requirement which is typical for many university programs. (Check the department specs to make sure that holds for film as well).

Their mid-range is about 27 ACT/1250 SAT (M+CR) but the GPA tends to be about 4.0 (recalculated to weight the academic core). Just checked the common data set and very few enter with GPA’s of 3.0. @Csgreen, do you have honors and/or AP to help boost that up?

For many art programs the merit aid tends to start at around 3.0 but they do require a portfolio. One exception is SCAD which has great film production facilities, is located in quirky Savannah, and is a relatively large creative university (as opposed to a smaller art college). Worth checking out.

I have several honors and will probably take a couple of AP’s next year (my school doesn’t offer too many). Hopefully my GPA will rise but probably only slightly. I haven’t taken the ACT yet but I got a 25 on the practice one without studying, so hopefully I will end up with higher.
