Schools in NC

I have 3.2 UW GPA / 4.1 W GPA
I have 2120 New SAT
and tons of other great stuff about me..

Which schools should I apply to in NC??

Is anyone familiar w/ good NC Schools???

Im thinking about the following schools:
(Top priority is top)

UNC-Chapel Hill

NC State University

Duke University

Elon University

Guillford College

UNC-Greensboro

Don't forget Davidson College. It is an elite LAC located roughly 50 miles North of Charlotte.

Duke should be on top :)

Sempitern, if you were a NC resident, and you had a choice between attending UNC for $15,000/year or Duke for $45,000/year, which would you go for...honestly. Is Duke $120,000 better than UNC?

Duke and Wake Forest give TONS of money for scholarships that are exclusive to NC residents. Don't forget about UNC-Wilmington its about 5 miles from the beach and 5 miles from the city. Tops in the country for Marine Biology.

Davidson is 20 miles north of Charlotte( not 50) and is essentially a suburb of Charlotte;;

No, Davidson's its own little bubble. No one wants to go to school in Charlotte, lol.

What do you want to study, Variance? For example, if you want to study engineering, NC State and Duke are your choices.

All of those schools are pretty much top notch, except Elon.

And you have a good chance at all of them. I'd say theyr'e all safeties except Davidson, UNC Chapel Hill, and Duke.

Duke will be the hardest to get into.

UNCG is pretty good but not as good as the others on the list. I've spent alot of time on that campus (5 summers actually) and it's a good school but not up to the standards of the others. You should just eliminate Elon, it has a terrible reputation. When I lived in NC and VA it was always the "reject" school.

Thats strange...Guilford's SAT's are lower than Elons. I have looked at schools extensively throughout NC and have never even heard of it.
Elon has a beautiful campus and is a very up and coming school with one of the best study abroad programs in the USA. It's honors program has an average of a 1420 SAT. Every school is a reject school for another school. Wake Forest is a reject school for Duke and the Ivies, would you say it has a terrible reputation? Its kind of like how BU is a "reject school" for BC. All of the kids who can't get into the top-notch New England/Northeast schools go to BU.
NC St. and Greensboro are equal if not lesser than Elon IMO, but I'd rather have a small, private school opposed to a public one.
Its just a little bit inconsiderate of you to say Elon has a terrible reputation and to not even consider it. Its a small, private school that is very affordable.

"Sempitern, if you were a NC resident, and you had a choice between attending UNC for $15,000/year or Duke for $45,000/year, which would you go for...honestly. Is Duke $120,000 better than UNC?'

but then again I'm from CA so..... yes definetly

but Duke does offer a lot of instate scholarships and 15% of the class hails from NC

Ok Sempitern, if you had a choice between attending UCLA for $15,000/year or Duke for $45,000/year, which would you go for...honestly. Is Duke $120,000 better than UCLA?

Duke is clearly the best.

What is wrong w/ Elon?

Personally I HATE huge impersonal state schools where I am just a number. I do immunopathology research at UCLA every friday and every day I go I am glad that I didn't apply. I couldnt imagine myself among the throngs of people there. So even though UC Berkeley is offering me 13,000 per year I'm turning them down. I like Duke better, espescially since I think they're gonna cover about 75% of the cost of going there :)

but.... for people who do like big schools, then, yes, I would say go to the state school if it will save you that much and you wont be getting any financial aid

Sempitern, I have been closely associated with several research universities, including medium-sized private ones. In all of them, students are nothing more than numbers. You are kidding yourself if you think you will be less than a number at a smaller school, unless that school happens to be a LAC.

As someone who went to Wake Forest and spent a dozen years in Student Affairs on N.C. campuses, my opinion is that the best education in the state is at Davidson. Your SAT is close to the average at Duke, the UW grades might be a bit low. You should be good at Davidson or Wake; UNC too if you're in-state. Alexandre (as usual) is right on target with his assessment one block up.

If you look at Davidson's numbers the past two or three years you will find that the top quarter of accepted students' SATs has edged up to about 1500; the UW GPA looks low, too. Especially for someone who does not provide geographical diversity, I'd say Davidson might be as much of a stretch as Duke. That is not to say there isn't a decent chance of admission but the OP's numbers do not suggest that Davidson is really a match, especially for a student from NC.

Yes, I would say Davidson is getting to be more like Duke in terms of admissions; I got waitlisted with a 1410 (old SAT) and 3.9ish uw, and I live in state. Davidson was really trying hard last year to get kids from our school to come, too, which was mostly why I was surprised that I didn't get in.
