Please tell me anything you know about Middlebury and University of Vermont. How do they stack academically? What are the people like? Thank you.

Middlebury is a top LAC. UVermont is a middling flagship public known for a granola/hippie/environmentalist bent and really expensive OOS tuition (with few OOS merit scholarships).

Does Middlebury offer business as a major?

No, Middlebury is a liberal arts college. The closest thing would be economics.

Departments & Programs

University of Vermont (UVM): About 10,000 undergraduates and 1,000 in the graduate school. the college is divided into 7 schools: Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering/Math, Nursing and Health Sciences, and Envrionment and Natural Resources. There is an honors college which you can be invited to or apply for as a returning student. Environmental Studies is a popular major and many people at uvm are interested in environmental issues from what i've heard. UVM is in Burlington, Vt, a small city of about 40,000 people. The city is located next to Lake Champlain. It's a nice town and there's a lot to do downtown as well as in the area. Since both schools are in Vermont, it is very cold during the winter months and mild in the fall and spring. I think Burlington gets a lot of snow due to the "lake effect", since its right next to Lake Champlain. I haven't been to Burlington during the fall or spring, but it is supposed to be beautiful during those months. Academically, UVM has a decent reputation, and is well known for its excellent medical school. It is very expensive for out-of-state students though. Hope this helps

UVM is known more for hockey than anything related to academics.

IVM is definitely somewhat of a party and hockey school. Not much in the way of academic focus. However, the education definitely isn't terrible, about on par for a flagship state uni. There's also a rather good honors college.

Burlington is an absolutely beautiful (though small) town. There's a great walkable downtown (Church St.) with lots of small, independent cafes and shops. The waterfront is also very beautiful.

Middlebury is considered somewhat preppy, but it certainly is a top-tier LAC. But no business major, since it's a LAC.

I'm a Vermonter, btw.

Burlington is the home town of Ben & Jerry's!

No, South Burlington is :P

The first Ben & Jerry's was in downtown Burlington.

HQ is in South Burlington, though.

Two other top schools, Dartmouth (NH) and Williams (MA), are not in Vermont, but are located in small towns next to the Vermont state line. It's probably about a 5-minute drive to Vermont from either school.
