Schools that don't require counselor recs?

What Tier 1 schools (HYPMS, CIT, JHU, WUSTL etc...) don't require counselor recs?
My school allows for only 6 applications to private schools... they'd rather have everyone go to UCB. we have one counselor per 500 students. Where can i apply on my own (without school approval)?

ALL top tier private college require counselor recs. But with common app schools, your counselor only needs to write 1 letter of recommendation. I would ask what you could do to help cut down his workload- address and stamp the envelopes sent to the colleges? Make photocopies of your transcripts? Have your teacher recommendation letters filled out before the school year ends? Those forms never change, so if your teachers are willing to do that it would cut down on the list of things to do.

Woah cyber…that’s a gross breach of their rights. In no way shape or form can they limit you like that.

Talk to your counselor and try to nicely get him to sway the limit. If that doesn’t work, you can give your teachers self addressed stamped envelopes, and they can send them in directly also.

“My school allows for only 6 applications to private schools…”

I agree with Arch3r25 - why does your school have this kind of limit?

It is surely in violation of district guidelines to limit the number of schools a student can apply to.

My school is really competitive so they’re afraid that the majority of the students would apply to over 10 schools and our unwilling to process so many applications. We send 80 students to UCB, and they think we should be satisfied with this…

I’m wondering if i could just contact the colleges at the end of my junior year and talk to them. I believe i can send unlimited transcripts before summer starts. Once senior year starts, i’d probably be limited to 6. The teacher recs shouldn’t be a problem and maybe i could explain my situation? What about mid-year reports?

You need to talk to the head of the college counseling office and/ or the principle WITH your parents. You need to be able to give valid reasons for wanting them to make a change or exception to this rule. Are your parents supportive of you applying to more than 6 private colleges? Do you intend on applying to UCB and other UC’s? Or are you not interested in large universities.

IF you are applying ED or EA, you won’t need to send the mid year reports. IF you ARE considering applying early, do you have the GPA, SAT’s, EC’s to be seriously “in the running” for acceptance at one of the top tier schools? Or do you need to show continued improvement in your grades, or do your Sr year classes need to be considered in order for your application to look “strong”? If you are considering applying ED , do you know you will not need financial aid, and your parents are comfortable with you applying Ed to a top school, knowing what the cost of attendance will be? If you are deferred, you will need to have the school send in your mid year report in Jan, in order to continue to be considered for acceptance.

Your school is crazy. If you really want to go to a private college, consider transferring to a different high school.
