Hey fellow CCers, I have one question about colleges and minorities. Are there any schools that really give an upper-hand to minorities/hispanics? Like, for example, racial/ethnic status being a semi-important/important part of admissions? I think I heard something that UNC factors the minority card into their decisions, but that school's out of my reach--but anyway, my stats are below if you want to refer to anything.

Exactly what do you mean by "schools that like minorities" and "upper-hand"?

sorry, I did a poor job at wording things in my previous post. I meant are there any schools that give minorities a leg-up on the admissions process. When I visit the collegeboard website I always look and see that for the schools I look at, racial/ethnic status is only considered. Which colleges is it listed as important or very important?

And thanks King, I'll have to look into St. Johns

Yeah, pretty much every school outside of Cali is looking to boost its Hispanic percentage, you will most certainly get a boost anywhere you apply outside of CA.

Most colleges are interested in increasing the number of Hispanic students that attend. Exceptions are some state schools such as in California and Michigan where laws have been passed that restrict the use of race or ethnicity for admissions. On the other hand, rural LAC's in particular are looking for diversity since their location oftem makes them unattractive to minority students.

Be aware that while schools may give a URM a tip, it is not likely to make up for major deficiencies in your record. The exception might be if you show that you have dealt with extremely difficult challenges in attaining an education.

Please use the search function on this forum as the subject of URMs and admissions as been discussed ad nauseam.
