Schreyers Honors College Class of 2019

I’m starting the thread. With less than 24 hours to go for the notification for Schreyers Honors decisions being released online 3/11 at 3pm, please post what you think your strengths and weaknesses are as to why you were accepted or rejected and if you interviewed. Good luck everyone.

Is it true that you have to accept PSU’s acceptance before decision comes out? And if not decided yet, will they still give you the decision afterwards?

No. You have to be offered admission to PSU before they can choose you for Schreyer. You do not have to make your decision until May. @SATManiac98‌

@satmaniac98 looking through last years thread I did see a few posts where they received acceptance into Schreyers before they heard back from PSU admissions. Either way, I would call them Thursday to get an update if you don’t see any Schreyers decision tmro.

You’ll only know if you got in to Schreyer if you have an offer from Penn State. If you are on a waitlist, you won’t get your Schreyer decision until you are off.

Son didn’t get in. Congrat to all who did. For those who didn’t I’m sure there’s plenty of schools you have to choose from. Peace out PSU…

PS. Really thought my sons essays were very well thought out and creative but with so many applying I suppose they really take the cream of the crop. His interview with a woman alumni of about 25 years of age went just OK but not great. Son said she made a comment about girl sororities at PSU being for “all white girls” when son told her his sister is in a sorority at PSU. She might have been hispanic but regardless definitely found that unprofessional and made him a bit uncomfortable.

Accepted…

Accepted! Looks like I’m going to have to visit State College now.

Accepted oos. Have to go visit as well

OOS Accepted! I did not attend an interview session although I was offered one. Also in terms of strength: I think it was my essays that helped me as well as my teacher recommendations. As for weaknesses: If any, it would have been my EC. Although I have alot, I did not think they would not be enough. Especially since I did not have many leadership positions.

Accepted

Strengths:

I was able to write an entire essay about going back in time to see dinosaurs lol
Other than that, my writing in general is definitely an asset.

Weaknesses:

I wrote an essay about dinosaurs.
I didn’t show any interest, other than asking for mailed information.
Was not interviewed (I completely forgot to sign up for one, oops)

Accepted as well. OOS. Didn’t interview. Tough decisions ahead as Penn State, even with the $4500 award for SHC, is just not as forthcoming with their scholarship money. Waiting to hear from one more school and then will finalize all future plans.

mhhm interesting about acceptances without interviewing. Wonder what the outcome would have been had my son not interviewed

Accepted in State!!

Strengths:
Essay, Letter of Recommendations , EC and Interview (My alumni grew up in my neighborhood and it was an extreme coincidence, plus I actually rapped to him in my interview)

Weaknesses (In question):
Wrote an essay based on Dr. Suess’ “Oh the place you will go”

Accepted students, PM me.

So I saw on the website it said $4.5k renewable for up to eight semesters. Does that mean $9k a year or 4.5k?

don’t obsess over the interview. It’s tough to get in, that’s all there is to it. The best essays in the word don’t mean much if what is expressed in them doesn’t match the applicants ECs (indicates interests) and letters of rec

  1. evaluation of transcript
  2. faculty reader ratings (rigor of classwork, essays, letters of rec, and ECs that display passion. a passion that is supported by the letters of rec)- see a common denominator? Faculty readers do not have access to interview information

Think about the problem of using the interview in anything but the most extreme cases. Having a good, ok or bad interview will not have an effect. A disastrous interview could. An exceptional interview, may be.
The interview process is more about recruitment and keeping in touch with alumni than evaluation of candidates. The interviewers who are not employed by admissions do not (cannot by law) have access to your records.

@vic1157 that $4,500 per year so total 4 years is $18K

@vic1157‌ $4.5k/year. Even in-state it’s still pretty expensive. Ohio State OOS, with merit awards, is actually ~$5k cheaper/year than PSU is with the Schreyer scholarship.

yes, not a cheap school but when you get any kind of merit money from PSU count yourself lucky even if it’s only $4.5. My daughter is graduating this May and has had such a great experience and was just accepted into her first choice for grad school for speech pathology. No regrets even paying a full OOS tuition
