Science requirements for Creative Writing Major

Son accepted today (Yea!). He is a brilliant writer and is attracted to JHU's creative writing program. His only worry is that Humanities majors have to do 30 credits in the sciences. What science classes do the artsy type students take at JHU?

I'm assuming you're referring to the writing seminars major. I took a look at the degree checklist (avaliable here) and your son will have to take 12 credits of classes designated as N, Q or E, which is natural science, quantative or engineering. First of all, if he took AP Calc or any of the AP sciences in high school, those will count towards that requirement. In terms of what classes he can take here, take a look at the course listings for Fall 2006. While some of the "artsy type" students either here or on the official message board can probably give you better answers to what science classes to take (I'm an engineering major), just off of the top of my head, I can think of classes like "Conversations with the Earth", "Dinosaurs" and "A Guided Tour of the Plants" that I know non-science people have taken.

The other 18 credits have to be S, N, Q or E, meaning the courses can be in one of the areas from before, or they can be social science courses, which should be an easier requirement to furfill.

Thanks for the quick response. He took AP Bio (5 on the exam) and is taking AP Calc and AP Physics now. I didn't think the APs could be used to fulfill the requirements. That will be a relief to him.
