Topic: Do changes (technology) that make our lives easier not necessarily make them better?

Many people view technology and innovation as progressive steps towards easier lives. While new technology certainly does make life a little bit easier to some people, most of the time, it does little to make life better.

Over the past 10 years, there has been a huge technological boom in the United States. New cars, televisions, cell phones, and other devices have improved drastically making life a whole lot easier to go about living, but have these gadgets really made our lives better? A recent survey conducted by the American Technological Society found that the majority of Americans today find that technology has become inseparable from their daily lives. At first glance, it may seem that technology is making a profoundly positive impact on society, but au contraire, it highlights a negative effect: technological dependence. Technology, it seems, is making out lives a bit too easy. New cases are always popping up about internet addiction, decreased physical activity, and carpal tunnel syndrome which are all linked to overuse of devices today. Finally, a recent study conducted by Citizens Against Technology has also found that most Americans (Over 70%) do, in fact, spend too much time in front of their television or on the computer.

Another problem, which brings about the mental effects of technology, is the feeling of being rushed. Because technology has become so ingrained in our minds, we, as a society have become adaptive to it. In a phone survey that was conducted in my neighborhood a few weeks ago, it was shown that many people (especially the elderly) feel that life has seemed to go on faster and the world has become a lot smaller. At first glance it seems like a good thing because more is getting done and we are progressing faster than ever as a civilization, but as others see it, the rush and the stress caused by modern society and technology has diminished enjoyment and appreciation for pure life.

It seems paradoxical that something thats supposed to mean good can also be very bad, but until we realize the dangers of modern technology, we may not be able to realize what life is really all about.
