I wonder too. S was accepted to a couple of school at this level with good but not maximum merit. I’m wondering if our zip code, professions etc. play into it or if it’s based more on institutional priorities and app evaluation.
yes. I’m guessing institutional priorities play a hand in it. On their website, they talk about leadership being important for the bigger scholarships but, on last year’s thread, someone said only 15 or so of the two big scholarships are awarded so certainly not counting on that. Any merit is good for us though since we are full pay and most of D’s schools don’t even offer merit!
Thanks. S has tons of service but not a lot of leadership.
I think these Jesuit schools like service! D has leadership but almost no service. Lol.
S’s Jesuit HS requires a minimum of 50 hrs community service as part of graduation requirements.
Most NHS members in sons class avg 100 hrs per year.
All part of becoming the “men (and women) for others” that is ingrained in them from First year orientation until graduation.
It has made my S a better person to spend so much time helping others who do not have as much as we do…something Society as a whole might seek to emulate more.
Of course, I spent 8 years at Jesuit HS and college so I am biased as well.
Do we think decisions will come out today?
Honestly, though, from an admissions standpoint, if those service hours are required then they don’t “count” as much. The student had to do them. Not saying volunteering isn’t a wonderful thing but students who do it without having to likely stand out more.
I never pushed D to volunteer because her ballet took 30+ hours a week. With an all honors and AP load, she was up until 12:30 every night doing homework after 4-5 hours of dance every weekday. She does volunteer here and there when she can but it didn’t add up to anything she put on her app. She would love to do more in college and I also think it’s a great way to meet other like-minded people who would like to make a difference.
yep! probably not until 5:00 pst.
I hope tonight!!!
Anyone elses portal down again today?
mine is down but it was down yesterday too and no decisions
Agreed
Poor IT Administrators at SCU, who has to keep up the constant page refreshes
If it does not come out tonight I am gonna be annoyed
That is an interesting take. I highly doubt admission officers at a Jesuit school (or any school) would sit there and discount any service whether it is required or not.
Maybe it goes like this…
“Sorry, Sally we know you gave up a Spring Break week to build houses in Appalachia but we have to discount the first 50 hours because you had to do it.
But John, you get full credit for your hours helping at the church open house that Mom and Dad made you do to make it look good for your college app?”
I should inform my sons guidance office who pushes required community involvement in developing the cura personalis.
Now I know why my sons GC recommends not following these boards.
You are all such a hoot.
I wish all the children well.
It doesn’t make those students stand out from other kids in their school if they all do mandatory hours.
Easy now… All of us are not wayyyyy over the top but rather sharing what information we might have about when decisions have been made, little tidbits of intel gleaned from conversations to make what we hope to be a happy moment a little easier to wait for.
I, for one, appreciate the digging others have done and the intel they have shared so I don’t have to do it.
Opinions are just that - you may disagree or agree - no need to denigrate.
A little grace for the parents who have watched their stressed out kids struggle in this unusual year. All we want is for them to be happy.
