My daughter was accepted into the School of Engineering. 4.3 GPA, many AP, honors and college classes. Has anyone received merit based scholarship information yet? If so, was it on the acceptance letter or found elsewhere?
Hi All,
D21 IN 3.9 UW 4.43 W OOS. I visited it with her brother S18, did the tour ha remember when that was an actual thing! We were rushing through it since we had to drive to Cal Ply then onto UCSB saw 7 schools ending at UCSD so it was a whirlwind and in the summer. Our son ended up at UCSB, in the end he only applied to 3UC’s getting into 2. So I am trying to remember our tour but I don’t think we even walked around the town or is there a town? I just remember super convenient from SJC, a beautiful but very compact campus and a yummy taco place right around the corner that our guide recommended, now I regret driving around the outskirts, our son thought it was too small immediately so he headed to SLO to go on a hike. Our daughter wants to be with her brother at UCSB, but that is a big IF and will not know till March, so trying to get feel for the surrounding area of SCU any insight to google would be so appreciated!
This college thing is a total crapshoot, and there sometimes isn’t any rhyme or reason to anything and it so hard for people to compare and constrast especially this year!
Best of Luck to every one here on the thread!!
No “real” downtown in Santa Clara, but both downtown San Jose (real) and Santana Row (and Valley Fair Mall) are within roughly 3 miles of campus, different directions though.
Question is - do kids go to these downtowns? How do they get there? Is there enough going on on campus that they don’t need to go anywhere else very often? Do kids have cars and go places on the weekends? S at Bowdoin hardly ever leaves campus. Doesn’t feel the need.
I don’t spend a whole lotta time in the area, but certainly there are plenty of places to eat and drink, get groceries (Safeway) right around the SCU campus. And there’s Avaya Stadium, where the Earthquakes MLS team plays (and other events), and Cal Train to SF, Palo Alto, Mountain View (both have nice downtowns) or SJ, are right across the street from the SCU campus too.
Downtown San Jose is a 3-mile straight shot down The Alameda. I’d run/walk it w/o an issue, but I know kids aren’t probably like me.
And Santana Row is a HUGE night/day spot pre-Covid. Yes, the SCU kids go there.
sounds fun!
thanks so much what is the Alameda? D is a daily run girl would that be safe for her? She runs 5-8 miles a day it is her therapy captain of her XC team. Her twin will most likely be going to school in Colorado so I love how convenient the airport is that is a plus. They want to be close but not same school and they want to get the heck out of Illinois. Our oldest will graduates from Boston University and is staying out there big sigh>
It’s a long avenue that spans a few towns in the South Bay and Peninsula.
During the day, I’d run it. But I’m not a big fan of running at night, especially my D’s.
There’s a small track at SCU:
@Moma_Kat my D20 is a freshman at SCU. She was very concerned about the lack of a “college town” but this has been a complete non-issue. Obviously the pandemic is precluding lots of on-campus activity, but a number of kids live off-campus but within a few blocks, so there is plenty to do (greek life, The Hut restaurant, friends’ houses/apartments). She also occasionally takes an uber to nearby Santana Row (shopping/restaurants) and I know a few of her friends have taken day trips to San Francisco and Santa Cruz (she was too busy with schoolwork to join them). She has said many times that she’s so glad she didn’t let the absence of a traditional college town sway her decision to attend. Her experience has been that there is plenty to do within walking distance and I’m sure it will be even better once campus is fully open.
Thanks so much! We are going to come and check it out in early Jan if travel Ban is lifted that is. Going to stay for a couple of weeks and then visit our son, their school doesn’t start in person till 1/21.
CA requires 14 day quarantine so it’s not so visitor friendly right now. I don’t see that changing any time soon.
yep aware we will be quarantining for 14 days
My merit aid was posted!
Where was it posted?
eCampus
Found the merit. $11k Bronco Award. Used to be called incentive award. Eh. It’s ok I guess. We are full pay so we will have to see how the rest of the chips fall.
thanks, Just checked eCampus, my S got award as well.
$12k scholarship and Ford Fed Direct loan.
anyone knows what is the rate for these loan?
@homerdog do you know if theres a chance that we get any additional scholarship? also we got the same award but diff amount (7000) any ideas?
I think they listed all merit scholarships today. Any other grants would be need based and I don’t know about them since we don’t qualify.
