Maybe that means no institutional need based aid

I am confused about this Bronco Scholarship. It is not listed under “merit”. Is it the amount they are granted…yearly or one time offer?

What were your child’s stats?

No it’s says it’s renewable. Bronco scholarship is an incentive scholarship.

I have an older daughter and her schools didn’t have anything like this. Merit or nothing. Do other schools do this?

D just got an email about the financial aid. It says all aid - merit based and need based - is on the website now. Maybe check your student’s email and read through that letter if you’re not understanding what you’re seeing.

@mamamchenry Some schools only give need based aid and some give both need based and merit based aid. SCU gives both so, if you qualify for need based aid, you might see both or you might just see need based aid. Anything called a “grant” does not need to be paid back. That’s your discount on the full price of admission/room and board.

Yes, I know that part. We don’t qualify for need based, but have seen Merit Aid from other schools. This “incentive grant” is not like the Deans merit award…that’s what confused me!

I think it’s still consider merit since it’s not need based. I read that only 40 percent of students get non-need based (merit) aid

when need to accept this merit offer? did not mention the time…

Hi! I was hoping someone could help me. My son applied EA and was accepted for Mechanical Engineering.

We live in Washington state and he wants to go to school in California so he was super excited to receive this acceptance. His older brother attend UC Davis! Guess our kids want more sun!

I’m trying to understand the Grants / Scholarships for SCU.

On his award Summary, it shows a $20,800 Need-Based Grant. When we open up his College Financing plan, it lists the $20,800 as a Merit-Based Scholarship and shows $0 for Need-Based Grants.

We’re just wondering if the money is truly a scholarship or if it’s a grant and if there’s a possibility of scholarship money still?

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Mine says the same thing except with 12.7k. I have a feeling that there’s some sort of glitch in their system. In the applying 2 college reddit lots of people received 0 need-based aid but had an institutional efc of 0. I just contacted their financial aid office to see if this was a mistake on their end. :’ I hope everything works out for all of us.

Thanks so much for the response. I think our best bet would be to contact the Financial Aid Office too! We’ll give them a call tomorrow.

Just looked at the scholarship info - D got 9.4K/year! SCU is still pretty expensive with a 9.4K scholarship. We dont qualify for need based aid. At this point, looks like SCU may not be an option.

We do know many friends’ kids who went to SCU and they all had a great time there. We were hoping the scholarship may be a bit more so that the difference between UCs and SCU may not be that much, but its not the case for us!

Again, good luck to the folks who are seriously considering SCU - its an awesome small college.

I wonder how they come up with these merit amounts. 7k, 9.4k, 11k. Seems so random.

Is the deadline to accept the merit offer also May 1st?

I assume you accept offer of admission and merit before May 1. I don’t think it works any other way. They aren’t going to take their offer away. I would not accept anything until you decide you’re going to school there. Once all of your acceptances are in, you might want to ask for more merit and if you accept this offer, I bet it’s all over for that. I haven’t a clue if they will give more but this year that could happen if they aren’t making their class by springtime.

A minor correction - D got $9.3k ($3.1k per quarter for 3 quarters per year)!
