My daughter is having anxiety over which college to choose as a Biology major. She is deciding between SDSU and UCSB. She believes her chances of getting into grad school would be better going to UCSB, but she felt SDSU was a better fit for her personality. Does anybody have experience in making the right choice in this matter?

There are many things you need to take into account when deciding on the college. I would assume most CC posters would say UCSB, just because it is a UC and not a calstate. I on the other hand would like at each college more closely.
- Compare the cirriculum for the Biology program at SDSU and UCSB
- What is the cost differential between the colleges?
- What is her ultimate goal with her degree? For Med school, Dental school, Grad school a UC would be better.
For Nursing, SDSU has an excellent reputation. - Better fit is definitely underrated. Being happy at the school you attend will definitely make a difference in a students academic career. Having just spoken to my older son at UCD, he mentioned that you will have good classes, bad classes, good professors and bad professors everywhere you go, but if you really to like the school you are attending it makes for a far more enjoyable 4 years.
Good Luck to your daughter. BTW my younger son chose SDSU over several other good schools.

Definitely South Dakota State University. Great program and not as expensive, even out of state. :)

@Torveaux: I think the OP means San Diego State University instead of South Dakota.

She is absolutely correct.

@Gumbymom - sorry, just my lame attempt at humor. South Dakota State is a great school and it is older than San Diego State, so it really has the rights to the abbreviation. I knew who y’all meant though. :)

Isn’t this question a few weeks late? The SIR deadline for both schools was May 1st.

Definitely UCSB. UCSB is amazing in many of the sciences. It’s top ten in my field and all if the undergrads I have met from there (4 I think) loved it and got a great education. It’s not a party school for everyone, there are some brilliant students there.

UCSB is just another calibur of school but your first answer is right, for some things, like nursing, you would stick to SDSU.
