Has anyone been accepted to both UCSD and SDSU and struggling with making a decision? I seriously change my mind every day, and with the upcoming date for intent to enroll I'm getting nervous. I'm going into engineering, and feel like UCSD may be able to offer me more, but I'm not sure if it's worth the larger investment.

Curious. What do you think SDSU has to offer YOU that UCSD can’t?

I’ve been told about how sdsu offers a more hands on approach vs UCSD’s heavy theory and research oriented side. It’ll also be considerably more affordable for me.

i transferred to UCSD in 2011. i’ve been at SDSU since fall 2013 but im leaving after this semester… UCSD had at least 3 TAs for each upper div class and lover div i was taking whereas at SDSU some of my classes had zero TAs. UCSD has a lot of programs to help students with different aspects of skills development such as communication leadership program or random 1 hour seminars that focus on career developments. UCSD has a huge population of international students. there were so many europeans / asian international students in my business classes.

what SDSU has over UCSD is a frat row. lower costs. compact campus if you like that stuff. a rock climbing wall.

the people at UCSD are very diverse and most the students have big goals whereas at sdsu the mentality isn’t as driven. im sure you’ll find academic driven people around SDSU but i didn’t find that many in upper div CS classes, nor math / statistics classes.

the weather in La jolla is much cooler than SDSU. there is a lot of art around the UCSD campus. take a look if you can whereas i noticed the absences of art at SDSU although i found some random loquat fruit trees, pomegranate, and some herbs around the engineering area.

someone mentioned stuff about hands on approach. well UCSD has plenty of hands on activities throughout the quarter system.

if your purpose of going to college is strictly academic UCSD is the right choice. if you’re here for social reasons then perhaps SDSU. my RA told me around 2017-18 UCSD will start building its own frat row. if you visit UCSD right now, you’ll see lots of construction for academic buildings near the PC center whereas SDSU newest construction is the student union that has been planned since 2001. there are no plans for newer academic buildings.

most of SDSU budget will go towards improving its sports like the football team and building facilities to adhere to non academic purposes. why? sports like the football team generate $ and having a 24/7 gym with its rock climbing wall attract students that value that more for SDSU while the $ for UCSD comes from its research.

if you’re majoring in econ there’s this place near UCSD called the econ tutor (the guy has a test bank for all upper div econ classes) at the wholefoods plaza.

unless your major is strictly business, you should go to UCSD (keep in mind UCSD has launched its own business minor in 2011. the REU for the stats dept in SDSU hasn’t had a SDSU student for the past 7 years. the student resources at SDSU are a joke.

@nujabes29 thank you for the lengthy reply, this was exactly what I wanted to hear about. So the ultimate question would be do you feel like UCSD is worth the extra 30,000 investment overall? ($10,000 more x 3 years).

If you don’t mind me asking, which school did you select? I got into both universities as well (in addition to 11 others) and I felt UCSD was the best decision for me.

Definitely UCSD, SDSU sucks at all aspects.
For engineering definitely UCSD
SDSU is for people who slack and party, also ranked one of the most dangerous college in the US out of 50.
In UCSD, its Warren College is almost dedicated to engineering. There are even 4 buildings for it.

By the way what did you ultimately choose?

@iamlordvoldemort: What do you have against SDSU?? This forum was setup to disseminate information, not to spout your own personal biases. You forgot to mention that UCLA was ranked #1 and UCB was ranked #2 for the most dangerous colleges in the US. I never saw SDSU any higher than #6 on these ridiculous polls. Also saw MIT and UCSB in the top 25…

Talk to students from both schools to get their opinions. My daughter has several friends who attend UCSD and, for whatever reason, don’t feel an attachment to the school. They go to classes and that’s about it. They have lots of TA’s that teach the labs; it’s not just at SDSU, but everywhere.
SDSU alumni are funding new facilities for their sports teams but that’s not all that SDSU offers. Because it is so large, SDSU has multiple club and major options within the school.

Excluding athletics, student/social life, cultural studies, arts, health, education/credentials, criminal justice, and business, UCSD abolishes SDSU anytime. Social sciences however I would have to say that’s the only thing both schools are equivalent to each other for.

“In its next phase, SDSU expects to use donated funds for endowments to support its Honors College, research efforts, student scholarships and professorships and to build a new engineering and interdisciplinary sciences building.” - UT San Diego

Which one is better for Arts? Like Performing arts, teather arts, visual arts, design?
