SEAS Master's Degree in 4 years

Hello,

Do a lot of students do this at SEAS? I know that typically 30 points leads to a master's degree, and up to 15 can actually be done as an undergrad. So, with the right amount of AP credits, I could actually have a manageable workload (5-6 classes/semester) for 4 years and maybe stick around for 1 more semester to finish up. How plausible is this??

Advice from current SEAS students/grads greatly appreciated.

It’s possible. There’s someone doing a BS in financial engineering with an economics minor, and an MS in operations research, all in 4 years. Not sure what this person’s courseload is like. You can count on it being at least 6 classes per semester. Most people who do the BS/MS take 4.5 years to finish up, and you could definitely do it with 5-6 classes if you stay an extra semester.

I believe it’s possible to do it in Applied Math and Electrical Engineering. They actually have an official integrated BS/MS program for EE. That’s not to say it’s impossible in other departments, but you did ask what was “plausible”.

Also, remember that double counting isn’t allowed. If a class is required or counted as an elective for the BS, it doesn’t count toward the MS as well.

Thank you for the input. I actually was considering Applied Math or OR. But that person’s schedule must be really rough, with the Economics minor too…

6 classes a semester is a great way to burn yourself out by your third year. Seriously, it’s not like high school, 6 will kill your personal life.

That being said…my best semester GPA wise was when I took 6 classes but I know if I did that every semester I would have died.

Lol, you mean 7 classes is possible burnout. 6 is perfectly normal for SEAS.

agreed with c02, 6 can be standard fare for a lot of SEAS students. (i mean it is probably just 18-20 credits, its not like you have to appeal to take more yet.)

Question: are we talking about 5 classes and like a gym or 6 REAL classes??
