If I get a BA degree in "general education" and not sepcifically elementary or secondary, can I work at the secondary level, or are my options as a teacher limited? What I mean is do I have to major specifically in "secondary education" to teach at that level?

bump…

It must vary by state. I have never heard of a “general education” major in PA; the choices here are early childhood ed (pre-k-4), middle school ed (5-8) and secondary ed (8-12). Furthermore, I think that to teach secondary science, you have to first get a bachelors degree in the specific science, and then a masters in education. We do, however, have “gen ed” requirements, which is sort of like a distribution of credits over all subject areas.

You might try looking on the website of your state department of education for info.
