All you experienced college people...I need to decide when to take Calculus! My choices are 9-10 or 2-3. monday-wed-friday

9 am doesnt sound that early to me now, but maybe it does once you're in college. I love sleeping in. But I also dont want to sleep my life away, it would nice to be able to get classes over with and have more free time during the day. And it would be nice to be done with classes by 12 on friday

But the other pro of doing it in the afternoon is that I will have fewer classes in a row, theyll be more broken up, so then I can go to the library/study between breaks.

You guys know scheduling/how breaks work...what should I do?

here is my schedule (9-10 calc is blocked in but 2-3 is open)

I generally like “early” 9am classes because they force me to get up at a reasonable time. One semester I didn’t have class until 1 pm and I ended up sleeping till noon every day.

On the other hand, the 2-3 pm class might fit really nicely into your schedule.

Another question to ask yourself: are you better utilizing short breaks (e.g. 12:30 - 2, 3-4) or long breaks (12:30 - 4)? I personally prefer short breaks because I usually stay in the academic buildings and do reading or work on problem sets. When I have several hours off, I might go back to my room or the campus center and end up doing no work at all.

EDIT: B@r!um you totally stole my post!! haha

i would move it to 2-3. sitting through 3 or 4 classes in a row is rough and you have a long afternoon break.

Plus, my theory always was if my classes were spaced out just enough where i had a break but I stayed on campus it became productive time. I would find a lounge or similar and study, do work, etc.

On the other hand, if I had 3 hour break I’d go back to my room. That would lead to naps, hanging with friends, etc.

It depends on your study habits, but I would move it.

I’m not sure which break length would work best for me, but I feel like shorter would be more productive so I wouldn’t be tempted to go back to my room/read/watch movies.

But at the same time I could use the longer break to fit in time to exercise…with only ~2 hours I dont think I could run/job and shower (or I could just go to class all sweaty lol)

Also think about the professor teaching each class. When in doubt, always go with the better professor! (There are several professor rating sites out there that might help you, e.g. ratemyprofessor.com)

Another side of this is that if you like sleeping in, it is very possible that you will sleep through / skip your calculus class fairly often. Skipping classes in college is very easy and very tempting if it’s early. If you think calculus is something you will need to attend to do well in, I’d suggest moving it to the afternoon.

I would keep it where it is so that you are getting up at close to the same time everyday and get into a routine. I noticed you had a chemistry class (lab?) early on Thursdays and keeping a consistent sleeping pattern will make that more bearable.

Shapiro is a painfully boring prof. Depending on your personality, if you think that may cause you to sleep in/skip it in the morning, move it to 2-3.

On the other hand, the best time in college to have a 9am class is freshmen year. You’re still used to waking up at the crack of dawn for high school. I didn’t mind it then, but as a junior, even the idea of a 10am class seems too early (even though I’ve got 10am classes 5 days a week this fall…)

The best advice my D got at orientation was from a professor - under no circumstances go back to the dorm during regular class hours (9-3). It’s just too easy to get distracted or take a nap! Short breaks (1-2 hrs tops) would fit in with this advice.

I’d go for the 2-3 as well, but I hate mornings, hence why all of my classes are 11-3 MW, 11-2:30 TT, and 12-3 Friday. Not too early, but leaves plenty of time in the afternoon to do things.

I do have computer science classes in the late afternoon, too, though…so maybe I’d have less time than most. I just need a lot more sleep than the average person, and I’m in a triple so I have to balance two other people’s schedules into mine, so I Dont want to be exhausted all the time…
