Selectee NROTC Nurse Corps 4 Yr. Scholarship

My D was notified last week as a selectee for NROTC Nurse Corps. She wanted to apply to Georgetown or UPenn. She did not apply to these schools because she did not think that she'll get the scholarship. Georgetown and UPenn admissions said D can submit her application as oon as possible. Would she be able to get in either at Georgetown or UPenn? Her last choice is Seattle University.

Anyone else who got the NROTC Nurse Corps?

Thanks.

Now this is a great 1st in recent CC history. Congrats to the DD!

What are her stats? Maybe some here would be able to prognosticate on her admissability at these to elite campuses. Could she be "sleepless in Seattle?" i.e. is she "in" there?

From the bay area, California. SAT's ACT's not too high. GPA, Leadership since frosh are excellent. ASB President, tons of community service. Got in USD Presidential Scholarship. Seattle University Trustee Scholarship. USD accepts RN's before you can apply to BSN program. D needs a BSN program to avail the NROTC scholarship.

They only pick 90 to the program for Navy ROTC.

No, but I know they HEAVILY recruit for nurses.

In hindsight, I would have enjoyed being a Navy Nurse. They used to give out tours to the BSN students of the ships to try and recruit. Unfortunately, they never told them to leave off the high heels. Very funny to watch!

Here's my 2 cents ... and worthy every penny, I'm sure ... and no more.

Don't know how competitive Gtown and Penn nursing programs are. I suspect VERY. Thus good but not stellar scores @ those institutions may be a substantial, even insurmountable barrier.

Here're the obvious aces in your deck though ...

You are FULL PAY ... and it's value added revenue, i.e. not taking anything from THEIR FA expense budgets. It's new $$. While we were told our son would likely be admitted regardless, knowing that expedited it very rapidly in his case.

It could well be that she would not simply be "one more app" at this point. She's a distinctive applicant, and one you might have opportunity to plug in.

There MAY be an advocate within the Admissions and/or Nursing administration who would champion her cause.

I'd try to talk turkey with someone in the nursing program as much as the admission area. The latter are ultimately powerless if/when there is an academic or athletic champion pulling them along, serving as advocate.

Won't know if you don't try. How imporatant is it to her.

The ultimate answer??? It's not here. It's @ Gtown and Philly. Good luck! Don't waste anymore time here.

The Catholic University of America In D.C. has a fantastic nursing program and CUA is a crosstown affiliate of NROTC at George Washington University.

If it's NROTC, it's got to be NLN accredited. That's the good housekeeping seal of approval on a nursing program.

D was told by NROTC recruiter to submit required apps and DON'T WORRY. He will help her get to those schools. He said one person getting admitted would certainly not be a problem for the school. We'll see.

CUA is NLN accredited for both its BSN and MSN programs.

I'd never heard of this program. Sounds damned selective. Congrats! :)

^^^^^
The NROTC scholarship program has three options: Navy, Marine Corps, and Nursing. The applicant needs to select an option upfront when they apply for a scholarship.

I have heard of CUA. With that in mind, she is better off with Seattle University at least it is on the top 10 in the west along with USF. D got in at USF Nursing Program, they have Army NROTC. D will call both Gtown and UPenn to follow up next week. Thanks for the feedback.

The captain said there were 90 selectees in the whole US, and it goes down to 60 when some will not take it. It is $180,000 scholarship.

Doesn't the value depend upon the institution? Or is the nursing ROTC grant handled differently than the non-nursing scholarships?

Depends on your first choice, I guess. D's first choice is University of San Diego, but they do not have the first two year nursing classes. USD only accepts RN licensure leading to BSN. The notification D received says $180,000 4 yr scholarship. Maybe because she wanted to go to a private school? Some NROTC gets 2 year scholarships. When she applied, she specified Nursing Option.

NROTC scholarships are worth up to $180,000. The actual value does depend upon the University attended by the midshipman. NROTC scholarships cover tuition, fees, books, and a meal plan. Paying for a dorm room, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses are the midshipman's responsibility.

Navy Nursing is very sweet deal. A common phrase among docs is "Your name here, MD, Almost a nurse". You are under a different chain of command than doctors so doctors do not write your performance reports (you have free reign, life is alot easier in the military than in civilian for nurses). You also get the same 20 year retirement pay as everyone else, too, like doctors (calculated from base pay). Overall, pretty good deal-whether you want to make it a career or just a start in life.

Thanks for the ranking, however, this is not true to BSN. Some schools listed only have Master's program. UC San Francisco would have been closer to home but they do not have BSN program.

Morality Justice - I have heard also from my brother who is a retired Lt. Commander also said that life is easier in the military than civilian nurses.

Great American - Most schools would help pay for room & board, at least half. Some schools offer work grant to pay for the other half.
