Self-studying as a freshman?

Do you guys think it is possible for me to study for Ap Psychology as a freshman?

Does anyone have any personal experiences for self-studying in ninth grade?

And can you take Ap's at any age or are there restrictions?

Possible? Sure. Recommended? No. Why would you even want to? AP Psychology ain’t too difficult, but I don’t know why you need to jump into testing frenzy so early if your school doesn’t even offer anything at the 9th grade level.

Furthermore, AP Psychology is taken mostly by seniors; the number of freshman taking the test was “0%” as indicated by the Collegeboard. The only test with a sizable number of 9th graders taking it—I believe—is Human Geography. But even then, I wouldn’t self-study. Not worth your while if you’ve never taken an AP test before.

As easy as it might sound to “read the Barrons book and get an easy 5,” you need to realize that this is easier said than done, and that the people who do this are not freshman and have probably taken other AP exams before.

And I’m pretty sure you can take an AP test at any age (including out of high school), but don’t quote me on this. Call the Collegeboard to find out, but I suspect they’ll be happy to take your money whether you’re 6, 16, or 66.

Of course it’s possible.

Personal experiences? Dude, just buy the Barron’s review book and memorize it for a month. Guaranteed 5. If you’d done any research on this site, you’d know that.

And there are no restrictions. You’re in high school, so you can take any exam you want according to the College Board. Your school might not want you to, but that’s a different story.

So, most HYPSM applicants don’t take AP’s as a freshman, or a sophomore for that matter. Many of these applicants don’t even self study an AP ever. It’s not that these students aren’t bright enough to take an AP as a freshman, but there just is no need to. Yet, you think you should SELF-STUDY an AP as a FRESHMAN? Unless your school is extremely boring and you’re extremely intelligent, there is no need to worry about APs this early.

If you don’t want to listen to me on anything above, why would you self-study psychology as a freshman? I can see someone studying world history or maybe biology (after taking the intro class), but psychology on your own!? Why? I’m sure you could probably do it, but why?

I wouldn’t recommend it at all. You should really get used to the whole AP style through a class before you venture into self-studying.

What if my school doesn’t offer any AP classes?

Then chances are you’re not going to be able to get the exams at your school (your guidance counselor will probably have no idea what to do). You can look into taking them at another school.

However, I think that in that case, you should take exams for subjects you’ve taken in school.

i don’t know why everyone is so negative

I think it’s perfectly doable. I tried, and even took the test but i had to cancel the score (due to self studying Human Geo and Envi Sci, so i didn’t have enough time to focus on Psych btw i got a 5 on both).
Honestly, it’s not hard at all, and if you finish barron’s once you should be fine.

Why? Why would you want to? My school offered no APs freshman year. I didn’t even know (or care) about APs freshman year. Just do your regular stuff and don’t bother self-studying. I took the AP Psych test as a junior and got a 5 on it. I also had a class and read through all of the Barron’s book. It’s possible, but there is no reason to taint your freshman year with AP. You’ll get enough of it later on. Take it slow, enjoy freshman year.

In freshman year I only took the only AP course offered to freshmen - physics b
well i shouldn’t say only - except most freshmen who actually took AP courses took physics b, because hardly any could take anything else due to prerequisites

but i say go for it! it can only help you

^^It COULD hurt you.

You are going into a new school with new expectations, so you don’t really know what to expect. If instead of focusing more on your regular subjects you start focusing on the AP, it could potentially hurt your performance in other classes (especially when you are trying to get the hang of high school). Freshman year was a real leap from my little Junior High school and it took time for me to adjust. I just don’t think you should get caught up in the whole AP net freshman year.

Everybody is telling you you’ll get stressed and such… I really don’t want to give you an answer in either direction because I have no idea what your school is like or how hard it is. Therefore I have no idea if you have the free time to study.

I think a lot of people who are trying to get a certain number of AP’s done by the end of high school probably look back and wish they’d taken one freshman year, or more sophomore year, but you should also take into account that your first AP (for most people) is scary. I honestly agree with all of the people here saying your first AP should not be self study, but if you insist on doing so, I have a recommendation.

Go get a Psych book now, Barron’s maybe. Start self studying and trying to remember all the important points of the book. THEN, either take the practice tests in the book, or (preferably) look online for past OFFICIAL ap tests, and time yourself on one of them, taking the whole thing. If you get a good score, then you obviously have what it takes to self study, and you should sign up for the exam come March, and continue studying relaxedly up until the exam.

Some AP’s are hard, but if you just make sure you’re ready for the exam BEFORE you sign up, then you won’t find out at the last minute that you are unprepared.

My advice: Don’t burn yourself out before it’s necessary. Your Sophomore and Junior years are more important, and you don’t want to exhaust yourself out before your big years come.

Many people think they can do it without burning themselves out- they end up burning themselves out. I mean, I don’t even know why you’re on CC- you shouldn’t worry about college so early. You’ve just graduated middle school, and it takes some time to get used used to high school.

Freshman is a year to get used to high school. It’s way better to familiarize yourself with the clubs and extra-curriculars in freshman than to self-study for an AP.

I was wondering the same… Well, yes it is “a free world”, but why be on CC? This is a site about college stuff and for high school kids to inquire about college. You aren’t even in high school, so don’t worry about it.

I am taking APUSH as a freshman because my social studies teacher recommended me for it.

Duh it’s possible… Meaning you’re not going to die if you do it. And you’re the only person who knows if you can handle the stress and the material. And you can find a way to take the test somehow if you’re persistent enough. So just make the decision yourself and don’t try to sound impressive on this board by saying you’re self studying as a freshman, and don’t rely on advice of complete strangers who know nothing about you or your situation…well except me, you can take my advice (:

I might as well claim that I’m a freshman taking 7 AP courses.
