I’m a very science oriented student and I plan to study/work abroad in college, specifically in Asia. My AP Biology teacher suggested that I learn Korean, Japanese, or Mandarin Chinese. I’m taking French through school and seeing as how I have one more credit to get in that to graduate it’s too late to change my language choice. I decided to start with Korean and I can read Hangul pretty well. I’m not sure where to go from here in terms of vocabulary and grammar. Any tips or programs? Also if anyone has any experience studying abroad in Korea or Japan, stories would be great. I haven’t really decided where I want to go yet.
I’ve never traveled abroad (I’m only a sophomore), but I am also trying to self-learn Korean along with another foreign language in school (Latin). If you don’t already use it, talktomeinkorean.com is a great resource for grammar (they have podcasts and PDFs that help with listening/speaking and reading as well), it’s definitely soemthing you should check out. howtostudykorean.com also has a lot of grammar and vocab to study from, but if you want very useful vocabulary i recommend the app/website memrise, as it’s a language learning app that has course for korean (check out 1000 most common korean words). i hope you’re studying goes well!
For studying abroad, i recommend watching youtube videos of people who have done that and seeing their experiences, as well as doing research. Sorry, i can’t help you much there but i hope i helped!
(oh, and i see your a bts stan. who’s your bias? i really like hoseok lol)
Ah thank you so much! This is actually really helpful. I actually started using howtostufykorean.com the other day but I haven’t heard of the other two so I’ll check those out as well! As for bts a friend of mine recommended that I watch videos of kpop groups or kdramas to sort of familiarize myself with the language and she highly recommended bts so here I am stanning them like no tomorrow lol. My bias is Yoongi but I have such a soft spot for Jimin as well. I hope your studying goes well too!!
Look into the NSLI-Y program. The US State Dept provides full merit scholarships to study in Korea. It’s a competitive process but worth applying. http://www.nsliforyouth.org/
I speak Japanese and I’m studying Korean and Chinese I actually just applied for the NSLI-Y program for Korea and I studied abroad in Japan two years ago and hosted a Japanese exchange student last year through my school. My favorite materials for learning a new language are Italki (its a website where you can get tutors over skype usually for a really good price) it’s very safe and super helpful, fl3m.com (this stands for fluent in 3 months) it’s a great website to connect with other language learners and to get tips for learning new languages, and picture dictionaries (I use the oxford picture dictionaries) are extremely helpful for learning vocab and associating it with pictures so you think of the object or the situation as it is instead of through English, but you have to be able to read the language before you use them. I find that if you want to become fluent you need to try and disassociate your target language from the language you’re learning it through so you don’t have to translate it in your hear but instead think of it more like you do your first language. I hope this helps and good luck with your language learning! if you’d like someone to practice speaking in Korean, Japanese, or Chinese with feel free to message me!
Doshicos and OhBomi thanks for the recommendation to NSLI-Y! I’m going to look into it for the summer after I graduate in 2017. I’ve looked into some programs for study in Japan but unfortunately my family didn’t have money at the application time.
