I’m currently applying with my state’s Senator to be a Page for Summer Session I. I’d like to start a thread about the summer session in particular because I’m not really able to find a lot of information about what it’s really like. Since there is no page school, what does the average day look like? How much do you actually get to see Senate processions? What other sorts of things do you do besides work in the Capitol?
It would be nice to hear from former pages, or other people a bit more in-the-know. Also other applicants feel free to ask other questions about the program.
Hey Alamody,
I’m also applying for this summer and have the same questions as you. Which summer session did you apply for?
Maybe I’ll see you in DC this summer!
@lcfstav I applied for summer session 1!
Also I would just like to bump this. Has anybody heard from their Senator? My senator’s office told me that because the Democrats are now the minority, they’ll likely be getting less pages (I am applying for a Democratic senator), but will let their applicants know once they know. They didn’t say when it would be decided who gets one though. Does anyone have any idea?
Bump again!
I’m so excited to say that I was selected to serve as a page for Summer Session 1! I actually pretty shocked. I must have gotten lucky. But anyway, has anyone else heard from their senator?
So happy for you! Just found out on Wednesday that I am a candidate since my senator was given a page slot for Summer B. My senator says he rarely gets a slot! Regardless, I hope you have a great time in DC!
I haven’t received a reply yet. I’ve been in communication with my senator’s administrative director and he said last week that I should be hearing back in the very near future. Hopefully something will come this week! Congrats to both of you.
I was a semester Page but from talking with the staff I’ve stayed in touch with I know a little about summer! With no school, you will have a lot more free time than we did as semester Pages. There will be occasional trips sponsored by the program and the school. You will be present at all times while the Senate is in session. During the summer there are a much larger amount of Pages than during the school year. During the school year the majority gets 16 Pages and minority gets 14. There is a similar ratio for the summer. You will work on shifts of about 8 on the floor. So each parties pages will be divided into 3 or 4 groups because the summer session is larger. During times you are not working, they generally provide a room in the basement of the capitol where non-working pages are supervised by staff. Feel free to message me or tag me in a comment if you have anymore questions! I don’t check here too often
Hey everyone!
Sorry I haven’t logged in in a while. It was a fantastic experience, I recommend it to anyone interested in government and all of that. Most of what @il0510 said is correct, there were 50 pages (30 residents, 20 commuters). We worked on shifts of anywhere from 5-8. There were 21 democratic pages and 29 republican pages. We did have a lot of free time, and in the evenings we usually went to dinner or to the gym or whatever. On weekends we did fun stuff like museums, going to Georgetown, things like that. One thing I will say is that the proctors at Webster Hall were not very nice. They all seemed to resent us, and would impose harsh collective punishment when only one or two pages acted up. Especially when it came to room checks, they seemed to try to come up with things to get mad about. Generally, pages tried to get away from Webster as much as they could. Aside from that, it was a great program and I met some really great people! Feel free to ask questions or PM me.
