Senior Grades :[

I know everyone is busy checking their statuses/status threads, but if you would be so kind to read this, it would be very nice!

My senior grades are the same as my junior year grades, which were not that great (3.3 UW/4.0 W). Will this hurt my application, seeing that I didnt really improve from last year??

For USC, are our senior grades just to keep us in check, or are they used as a rejection/acceptance factor?
Thanks!

I’m pretty sure that as long as our grades don’t bomb, we’ll be fine.
They’re not gonna rescind their admission over one C or the like, that’s for sure.

So i’d say they mainly use senior grades to keep us in check.

I’m not exactly sure about the grades not counting. If they’re asking you for your midyear report, this means they’re unsure about you. It means your application is borderline good, but they want to see if you improved. If you did poorly, I.e. get a C/D/F, there is a high chance that your admissions officer will lean towards rejection. I would take these seriously.

btw einnob, did USC ask you to send in your senior grades?

Well, according to The Letter, I am supposed to send them in, yes.

if my online status doesn’t mention anything about senior year grades, does that mean i don’t have to send them in?

you have to send them in, whether they ask for it or not.

@einnob, dont worry, they didnt go down and you tried your best, so you are good.

even if i’ve already been accepted? i thought they were only used for admission.

if you already been accepted, then CONGRATS! no idont think so if you are already accepted, and yeah they are used for admissions

If you read the website wording carefully, you will see that mid-year grades may be submitted even if not specifically requested; they are not required* if not specifically requested. Obviously, if they’re requested, you need to submit them.

I have a vague recollection (some other poster should confirm) that in previous years USC sent out a letter asking certain students (not all) to submit 1st semester grades. I believe they might be considered the almost accepted students, and strong grades could make a difference. For those who did not get that letter, they could still submit their grades as well, which is what that status update mentions. For a student who really improves greatly first semester senior year, this might bring more positive attention to their application.

What I don’t recall (sorry) is if they requested grades for their strongest candidates (who had not received early letters of acceptance). Anyone remember? And no–if a student has already been accepted, they do NOT have to submit 1st semester grades.

OTOH, all admitted students will need to submit their senior year grades. If there is some horrible disaster, their admission can and will be rescinded.

In the past, after the scholarship notifications went out- all remaining applicants who submitted their applications by the scholarship deadline received a letter informing them that they did not receive one of the big scholarships. Included in this letter was a request to send in 1st semester senior grades. It was not optional.

I noticed from recent thread, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/858946-those-waiting-update-letter-received-admission-today.html</a>, itsv quoted part of the letter received this year and it does ask for senior grades. It does not appear it is optional.

For the record, DS had stats similar to those receiving scholarships, did not receive one of the big scholarships, and was asked for senior grades- it was not optional. He received his acceptance about 1 week after submitting grades which was at the end of February.

Perhaps there are some who did not receive this letter but I don’t remember hearing anyone state that in the past.

^^ Thx cc411. Her info is better so go with that!

My son was accepted before he got the “no scholarship” form letter that requests midyear grades (seems like it came faster this year). He did log in his grades, but I don’t think it mattered by that time.

I applied by Dec 1 and haven’t received the letter yet maybe because I live in NY and mail takes longer to get here from USC but if I never receive this letter than do I send my midyear grades or what? My application status on the website was changed last week to the “Forwarded for committee review” status if that makes a difference so I do not have that “preliminary” status that others seem to have gotten recently.

This question comes up all over CC; here’s my take:

If the info wasn’t important they wouldn’t ask.

Your first semester grades are what they are, not much point in worrying now.

Your grades haven’t deteriorated, so there’s even less reason to worry.

If you think they ask mid-year grades to “keep you in check” you might not be as ready for college as you think.

You’ve worked hard for 3 years to put yourself in position to be accepted at USC, don’t give them an excuse to have second thoughts about you; play until you hear the whistle, (all your admissions letters), succumbing to senioritis before that is just idiotic.

Just submitted mine online. They were better than I expected, and much better than last year, so that can only help me. One B in an IB class I had a B in last year (two semester class over two years), and another in a difficult (at my school) IB class. And my two terrible grades from last year are now As. :D

I have the preliminary status, so I’m hoping this will help me get nudged into a scholarship! :)
