Senior progress report

Our school sends a progress report (basically a snapshot of our grade mid-SEMESTER) to the colleges we’re applying to. This is mainly for people applying ED/EA, but regular addimission colleges see these grades along with our mid year report (S1 transcript.) My grades are all good, consistent with the last 3 years, but I currently have a D in AP Calc and I’m worried about my regular decision colleges seeing it. I find it very unfair since the semester is only half over.
My RD colleges:
UMass Amherst
Smith College
Hunter College
Baruch College
NYU

Should I be worried? I’m taking all honors and another AP this year so my classes are all difficult.

Our school sends them to every college we’re applying to whether they require it or not. My schools only request semester 1 grades but my school is still sending them

Start at the root problem. What are you doing to remedy the D in calculus? Improving that grade is job one. Do you see the teacher after school, ask for extra problems, get help online (ex. Khan academy), work with a tutor?? This needs to be fixed – any acceptance can be rescinded with a D or F as a final grade. And if you can get the grade up then RD colleges should also get a mid-year transcript showing the improvement.

Does anyone else’s school do this?

@apolloniasin No. our school district doesn’t do this. They won’t even automatically send the first qtr. grades without a student filling out an authorization form first. I agree with you. This seems completely unfair. Many teachers wait until the end of the semester to enter homework grades, class participation grades, extra credit that may have been earned, etc. This can significantly have an impact on your final grade.

It’s not unique - many HS’s do this as a matter of policy. Additionally for ED applicants, it’s not unheard of for colleges to contact GC’s for updates before the mid-year report.

If many teachers in schools that issue grade reports quarterly do this, I would well imagine that parents would be quite right in lining outside the principal’s office to complain.

Off topic, but I’m simple amazed that HS students would expect extra credit. They are in for a rude awakening in college.

Anyway, for the OP, the answer is simple for RD colleges - bring the grade up by the end of the semester. If you have a higher semester grade, it’s unlikely the college will care about your Q1 grade.

I am remiss if I implied that every HS class offers extra credit because this was not my intent. There are circumstances in which special projects that require effort above and beyond what is required at a high school level sometimes comes with a benefit for those who chose the challenge.

And…it is fairly standard in our district that many teachers wait to input performance and HW grades until the end of the quarter. They have to evaluate their full performance before assessing a grade. I would imagine it wouldn’t be to ethical otherwise.

End of quarter I understand, but you said end of semester in your earlier post - that is what I had an issue with.

Well, that’s why some schools weight some courses. Or in some cases, like the HS where I attended, they just say “suck it up; there is no extra credit in life.” I’m not singling you/your school out. I’m just amazed by the number of schools that offer extra credit, test retakes, etc. But that’s getting off topic.
