Hey, this is a question on how important senior year grades are in the initial admissions process. Let me clarify my situation: I am planning on applying EA at Stanford. I believe I have a good chance though I am not going to list stats, that's not the point of this thread- but as people have astutely pointed out, anything can make the difference at that level of college competition.
My question(s) are two-fold:
First, how much would Stanford take a senior 'progress report' into account, or would/do they at all? Since all materials have to be submitted by the end of Oct then they would only be receiving a 'quarter' type grade...which leads me to my second question...
Second, I am taking 6 APs this year, and I expect to get almost all A's by semester (maybe 1 or 2 A-) based on a similar course-load and similar teaching scenarios as last year. However-- my school treats 'quarter' grades like progress reports, they never go on the transcript at all. With that in mind, at least 3 (possibly 4) of my AP classes carry out class in a percentage grade fashion, yet teachers make assements impossibly difficult (almost everything is 'practice AP' level'). Thus most grades from these 3 or so classes are in the C/D grade range percentage wise. However, semester grades are ultimatley relative; being the top 1-2 student in all these classes I am certain i will get an A by semester. Teachers usually just give everyone B's at quarter/progress report time, because of the aforementioned 'unimportance' of the quarter grades.
(Note: I am in the same relative position now, I haven't been slacking at all, it's an issue of our school's top classes' grading policy as a whole)
Thus: If I only need to send in a grade progress thing at sememster end, I will be fine. However, if Stanford wants a senior report with EA, i feel I will be majorly disadvantaged, and possibly f*ed.
Thoughts, comments, suggestions, anyone know any information? Thanks in advance.

I am in the position as you, I always pull out with an A by semester but have a C in one of my classes currently

I'm with you on waiting for a response.

bump, need a reply on this

bump.. i really need some info on this.. or even general thoughts, etc

You should ask your guidance counselor what your school's approach to this is. My kids' school does release 1Q grades/progress reports to any ED/EA school that asks for them (even though the transcripts otherwise only show year-end grades). It isn't up to the student - the school policy is to release the grades.

I don't know how likely it is that Stanford will ask for the 1Q grades. My son's college counselor last year said about 50% of schools call in November/December to ask for 1Q grades for ED/EA applicants.

My son was in the same position as you last fall - his 1Q grade in AP Calc was not one he wanted anyone to see; fortunately his ED school did not call for grades and the semester grade ended up OK.
