Senior Year Grades? How Important?

Okay, so my cumulative GPA up to Junior year was a 4.6 weighterd (4.1 UW). and my final junior grades were:

AP Biology: A
AP Spanish: A+
AP English: A
AP Calculus AB: A+
French IV H: A+
US History H: A

My senior year has been a little more rocky because of all the stress associated with college apps and because of family losses etc. Anyway so this is what i anticipate my Midyear grades to be:

AP French: A+
AP English: B
Mandarin II: A+
AP Economics: A
AP Calculus BC: B+
Photography: A+
Physics H: B+

These grades arent terrible but they arent exactly exceptional either. Are midyear grades more of an afterthought in the college process...just to make sure you are still doing pretty well? Beyond academics I feel that I am an extremely competitive candidate, i just dont know how they will consider this final submission of grades that will be a factor of admission

i think in the past mid-year grades haven't been nearly as important as junior year grades, but this year, with the dramatic increase in applications, your mid-year grades will probably be a bit more important. colleges expect to use waitlists this year more than ever before, and good mid-year grades are one way for applicants to gain the attention of the admissions office in their favor. that said, i don't think your mid-year grades are anything to be ashamed of, and i doubt they will make a huge difference if you aren't waitlisted.
