I am a freshman registering for classes next semester. I am considering registering for a Latin Americna Studies/Service Learning class. How time consuming is the 1st tier of the service learning requirement?

It really varies by class, is what I am told. Most people say the 1st tier is usually not too time consuming. I think my D’s is probably about 2 -3 hours one day a week for about half or 2/3 of the semester, give or take. I think you might be the first to ask. It will be interesting to see what current students have to say.

Well, they are all supposed to be 20 hours. For mine, I kept a log of my hours whenever I went to my service learning location, and at the end the woman I was working with signed off on it. I’ve heard conflicting things about whether or not transportation time counts. I spent 17 actual hours doing service learning over the course of the semester, and was told that was sufficient because my service learning location was kind of far away (30 minute drive one way).

But the bottom line is that they are supposed to require you to complete 20 hours (or there about) throughout the semester. With some of them you might go with your class at predetermined times, and others (like mine) require you to plan out when you want to go on your own and make sure you have enough hours at the end. Center for Public Service does provide transportation, but you have to arrange for it a few days ahead of time.

I believe my DD does 2hrs a week helping ESL students learn english. She said she has enough hours to be done with her obligation but feels bad that they dont have alot of student help so she will finish out the semester.

It’s not a big deal. I had to go volunteer for like 2 Saturdays for 4 hours each. I wouldn’t worry about it being some sort of time commitment at all!
