Sharing, Venting, Supporting Class of 2018

The MT forum has a thread like this and I thought it might be nice to have one here.

If you didn't see the SAG awards Ty Burrell's speech was brilliant. Applies to our kids for sure.

Yep - loved that speech! Loved Bryon Cranston’s speech too.

D is really busy right now, with classes and rehearsals. I think that’s a good thing - less time to stress and obsess over upcoming auditions!

Let’s all thank Mother Nature for scheduling a snow storm mid week, so we could all get home from the MLK weekend auditions, and get back out for auditions next weekend in NY and other east coast spots!

I forgot that NYC Unifieds are this weekend! Break legs to everyone going!!! Stay safe and warm.

For anyone who will be in NY this weekend make sure you bring big, sloppy weather boots. When there’s a lot of snow in NY it is a real mess walking. Once my D and I went in a day after a big storm and within 5 blocks we had to divert into a shoe store and each buy a pair of Wellies. It was just impossible to walk and keep your feet at all dry. Your leather or suede boots will be ruined.
I guess because there are so many vehicles in the city it is hard for them to clear the snow well and you end up with huge mounds and then very narrow places for pedestrians to go through and huge deep frozen puddles that you sometimes have no choice but to step in! It really was like nothing I’ve seen at home. We are headed in Thursday afternoon for Friday audition and I already pulled out our waterproof boots. :-)

Really great advice dramamom0804! Crossing streets in the city after a snow storm is quite an adventure and not for the poorly shoed. The longer since it’s snowed the more disgusting the trek is.

Right – it is the puddles of deep, mushily wet, half-frozen slush that get unbelievable, as soon as the snow has melted slightly. Sometimes, in order to cross any street – at any point – you can’t avoid stepping into those things.

Fingers crossed that this mid-week storm doesn’t affect anyone’s flights for the weekend auditions. I know two people who have already had flights cancelled for tomorrow and Thursday! When there’s a backlog at the NY area airports, it can take a while to clear.

totally agreed on snow boots comments. lived in NYC and currently live up north. Bring layered clothing too. and break a leg to all!!! i need to get on and read ur audition stories so i can vicariously enjoy all the auditions. and i will keep u in thoughts on stress levels being ok too. Been there done that on applying side of things already so hang in there everyone.

The FAFSA and the CSS are done!!! I feel like a large bottle of wine is on the agenda! Is it 5 pm somewhere yet?

Just now starting the process - ughh!

Any advice appreciated - does it make sense to do one before the other? (my current plan is to do the FAFSA first, then the CSS second, since I “think” the FAFSA is easier . . .)

The FAFSA did seem easier. Less questions and more straight forward. I started with that one. It’s not hard just very time consuming. Block out a set time where you can do it uninterrupted. Have all your documents before you sit down, taxes, house payment, annuities, retirement info etc.

? we don’t need housepayments for the FAFSA, do we? Hoping i did not miss anything. i got most of FAFSA done too. not too bad but more details are needed… I don’t think we need the CSS but i’d best doublecheck. Sigh…

No I think for the CSS

My snow boots don’t fit over the brace I’m wearing for the broken ankle. Shoot! I think I will have to hit kmart for a cheap pair in a bigger size before we go to NY Thursday. NY is in the foot of snow band. It will surely be messy.

On the bright side it’s likely my D will have a snow day tomorrow and a little rest during this busy audition period…

I live in NYC area. It is very snowy and messy. If you have any questions about the weather and travel conditions this week, don’t hesitate to ask!

dramamom0804…thanks for the heads-up on the boots. Our 10am flight to NYC was cancelled this morning, and we spent all day in our local airport waiting to see if we could get on a flight once the the airports re-opened. We finally headed home this evening and are supposed to leave on a 4am flight…they wouldn’t give our bags back, but guaranteed us they will be on whatever flight we are on tomorrow. All I can say is, “We shall see”.

BUT…I’m beyond thrilled to have a chance to pack our wellies in a carry-on for tomorrow.

Wish us luck, I have a feeling we are going to need it.

BTW…there’s no way we will make our noon NYU audition for tomorrow, and they said they absolutely cannot reschedule it, except for one possible day in Feb. in San Francisco. BUT, they did say that they had quite a few people not show up…so it would be possible to show up and wait for a slot to open. The person my son spoke with seemed pretty confident that would work. Again, “We shall see!!”.

If I didn’t have to get up at 2 am to leave for the airport, I’d join you in that glass of wine! Enjoy, all!

^^Yikes. Hope all works out for you.

Word to the wise. Pack your most critical things (one audition outfit, headshots, resumes, music cuts if you need it and apparently your Wellies, etc.) in your carry on. S_ _ _ happens.

I pulled a psycho mom two years ago when they randomly decided they were going to check my daughter’s carry on though it was the proper size. We just were unlucky to board towards the end. (Note to self: pick seats in the back row because if nothing else, you can stow your bag.) In her bag was EVERYTHING that the next 3 stops (all on campus auditions on both coasts and in the middle of the country) depended on and if that bag didn’t show up - _____ fill in the blank. I’m fairly sure there were tears (mine). I’m also fairly sure that my daughter thought I was nuts and she was right. But we managed to get them to gate check it like it was a stroller instead of sending it to the conveyor belt at JFK of all places so some of you will understand my panic.

In hindsight, I was ridiculous but you gotta do what you gotta do. BREAK A LEG to one and all!

halflokum is right! H and D learned that the hard way at the LA Unifieds. Flew in to LA on Sunday afternoon for an early Monday AM Emerson audition. No bag and it NEVER showed up. Fortunately she had her music, head shots etc, but had no dress, shoes, make-up, flatiron or dance attire. 8:50pm they are dashing around Target while the cab waits at the curb. Of course Target doesn’t have dance shoes. So she did her dance call barefoot.

Of course they kept all this secret from me till they arrived home!

@austinmt, exactly the nightmare I was trying to avoid. You come this far with your preparation and all of the effort the last thing you need is to not have the things you need arrive. They want to take your bag? remove your shoes and swap them with your audition shoes before they take it. Strip right there at the gate and put on your audition outfit. Cry. I advocate lots of crying.

I’m being deliberately silly now but I can tell you that year, I was not above doing any of that. Yet another notch on my psycho mom belt. Those were my freak out things. Not anything that led up to it. Cool with preparing without a coach etc. and sorting what needed to be done on our own, but THAT STUFF was my tipping point and where I sort of lost it.
