Any good deparment stores/thrift stores/malls to get clothing near the UT campus?

There are a few on Guadalupe. The one that stuck out to me was Urban Outfitters

There are some on the drag, (Guadalupe between MLK and i think 27th st.), then there’s the dominion just of I-35N, then there’s the Highland mall (lame) off 35, I think…I sometimes get lost going there, Barton Creek is the better mall, but don’t ask me where it is…and South Congress St. in South Austin, thats supposed to be good

Wow, thank you! I love Urban Outfitters, but it’s only an occasional shopping treat for my meager budget. Are those malls within walking distance, or would I have to ask friends for a lift?

other than the drag, you need to get a ride there…they are nowhere within walking distance…

Well, you can take a bus. It’s free with your UT ID. That’s what you do at UT, take buses. I have a car, but don’t use it.

However, Buffalo Exchange is on Guadalupe and 29th and that is a really fun place for shopping on a meager budget. I’ve gone there and bought way more clothes than I needed. But they were SO COOL! I couldn’t help myself.

There’s also American Apparel, but once again, it’s very expensive.

Neat location! Thanks for the tips.

I’m actually very worried about getting lost on those buses, since I’m not familiar with the streets. Well, really, it’s just a worry that I might get somewhere only to realize there are no more trips back for the day. Do the buses operate all day? ;P

Different buses run on different schedules. Most run very late at night. And after midnight, there’s still the night owl buses. I’m guessing you won’t be shopping that late at night, though. lol. I would suggest looking at maps of Austin online, just on Google maps and familiarizing yourself with your immediate area. It will help you get used to the streets faster.

Go to Capmetro.com for a list of the schedules and maps, etc. It’s a little difficult to navigate, but not too bad. Not like the UT site. lolz. There is also a trip planner that is very useful. You just tell it when you want to go and where you want to go and it will tell you how to get back. Then you can plan a return trip. Unfortunately, that means you can’t change your plans while your out. That’s why I bring my iPod touch in case I need it, but that’s not a luxury everyone has at their disposal.

here’s a number that might come in handy, in case anyone needs to find their way around austin’s capitol metro but stops: 512-474-1200. i’m sure anyone can call them up, tell them where you are, where you need to go, and they’ll let you know where’s the nearest bus stop to head towards and how to get to your destination.

Also make sure you are on the right side of the street and know north from south.

It’s not scary. A lot of buses go back to UT. Just ask the bus driver if the bus goes near UT and its easy to find your way back.

How far out do buses go…like if you wanted to go visit the river or that lake near UT campus on the weekend…around 7 miles far

I’m sure the buses go downtown to LadyBird Lake…its in the middle of downtown…

Wow is that what that lake is called? I saw it a couple of weeks ago, it was really pretty…

Anywhere to shop for good wireless internet connection since I’ve hearing a lot that Dobie’s internet connection sucks.

Nxt, i’m also trying to do that if its allowed… do you know if we’re able to? I honestly don’t mind paying a monthly bill if Comcast or some other good provider is able to set up a connection in my room… assuming its within the rules at Dobie and all.

The farthest north I have gone is 10 miles to the cheesecake factory. xD The farthest south I’ve gone is 7 miles.

theres a Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue in Austin right? are those at the same mall? and how far away are they from UT?

Most of the decent malls are pretty far away. I think that’s at Bee Caves, I dunno. The mall at Bee Caves is fancy, but it’s pretty far away. Bring a car or make friends with someone who has a car.

Ladybird Lake is the new name for Town Lake. I don’t know anyone who calls it Ladybird Lake yet. lol. Personally, I don’t know why anyone calls it any kind of lake. It’s clearly a river. lol.
But i don’t know if Nxt was talking about that or Lake Travis. Dozens of buses will take you to Town Lake, but I doubt there’s one that goes to Lake Travis.

There is a Lake Austin shuttle route. I don’t think CAP Metro even serves out to Lake Travis because that area is not in Austin, it’s unincorporated.
