Has anyone had any positive experiences with short-term study abroad programs that offer volunteer opportunities throughout the year or with non-profits/foundations that focus on specific project in Latin America?

I'm well-aquainted with idealist.org, but there are just so many options, I was wondering if anyone had any input.

So far the Center for Cultural Interchange, United Planet, Cross-Cultural Solutions and the Global Volunteers Network have seemed like possibilities.

I also understand that different programs have different costs and provide varying levels of in-country support. I'm interested in pursuing something other than the usual suggestions from my college abroad office as my sister, who just graduated and is not associated with an educational instituition would be joining me.

Social work in Guatemala, Peru, Chile or Costa Rica is of interest. If anyone has any suggestions or words of wisdom from personal experience, I'd love to hear your input.
