Shot myself in the foot?

It's been a year since I've been at community college, and I've been off to a dreadful start. I've had quite a lot of domestic problems, especially concerning family, but I'll be mentioning those in my personal statement. Right now I was wondering if I'm completely screwed and unable to get into UCLA as a History/Anthropology major with the grades I've received thus far and if UCLA will listen to my never ending list of sob stories. I've got plenty of EC's, though I doubt it'll do much good. All responses are much appreciated!

English101 Honors: C
Astronomy: B
Philosophy: B
History102: B
Anthropology102 Honors: A
Political Science101: B
English102 Honors: B
Math103 (Calculus): C (yes I know I shouldn't have taken calculus, but there are personal/family reasons, this effectively destroyed my gpa)

cum. GPA so far ~3.0-3.1
I'm about halfway through to reaching 60 units

yea thats quite a reach to ucla…

It’s going to be tough, but not impossible. Really get a 4.0 from here on out to have a shot.

What Cougars said. It’s not too late! Strive for straight As for Summer and Fall, and then you might write about how your first year was affected by family concerns and such. And that, now, you’re back on track. Or something.

Does your school offer TAP? If they do, it might be wise not to pass the opportunity to apply.

Good luck though!

Definitely not too late for a history/anthro major. You can work your GPA up to mid-3s, which should be enough to get into that major, especially with TAP and those ECs.

How is it that your GPA is above a 3.0? You have a couple Cs and just one A, and math classes are typically worth more units.

^The average GPA for admitted history majors was a 3.72 at UCLA this year, one of the highest in the L&S College.

It’s not the toughest major to get into, but it’s defiantly not the easiest.

Pull that GPA up as high as you can.

The average GPA for Anthropology = 3.48…far more attainable

Bones, thanks for pointing that out. I also have an A in a language class (worth the same amount of units as a math class, go figure)

Thanks for all the responses! I’ll be redoubling my efforts in the coming semesters, no social life for me :(

social life is overrated.

Do TAP and select a non-impacted alternative major if your goal is to go to UCLA no matter what…otherwise just go somewhere else for anthro.

got into UCLA as an anthro major with a 3.15, not out of reach at all.

GPA isn’t everything…it means more of they see a trend of improvement so just do better here on out. Good luck :)

Congrats David! That’s pretty awesome. If you don’t mind me asking, what sort of EC’s did you have/what do you think got you in? My curiosity has peaked XD

What else is there that a prospective history/anthropology hopeful can do to buff up his application? As always any and all answers are much appreciated!
