UF has the better ranked CS school (I was also thinking about CompE here), but UCF IT is abet accredited too and is in a very good location. I heard the dorms at UCF are better too, and that the Orlando area has much more internship and job oppurtunities than Gainesville. For jobs, which is better? Thank you.
Overall, I really want to study in FL (and my parents can afford it) rather than VA. I am very keen on studying IT at UCF. I love everything (everything!) about the program and curriculum. It is ranked in the top 25 ugrad programs in the country, and is much more STEM heavy than other programs like Rutgers NB or FSU. Their programs are in their comm schools and have very little coding.
UFL seems a slight bit boring (other than very good athletics, there isn’t much else to the college) when compared to other FL schools. Don’t bash me on my opinion though pls.
If you have toured both schools I would say go with whichever school you could see yourself at. With your major, both schools would look great on a resume. (30% of NASA employees hold UCF degrees) I will say that I currently live right next to UCF and there are TONS of opportunities for internships. Those buildings are a majority of ones surrounding campus. If it matters any, UF is known as a party school because that is the only thing to do there. During the week the students grind to get all of their schoolwork done and then spend the weekends partying. If school spirit matters any to you, UF definitely wins that contest.
Both are very good options. Go where you’ll be happy. UF has more national reach but you can do quite well from either.
CS is not the same as IT.
CS focuses on designing computers and software, while IT focuses on managing them. Which interests you more?
UCF IT is somewhat more technically oriented than many other IT type programs that are more business based. This is a good thing.
I realize this, but my main problem was whether I should go to UFL or UCF for a computing degree and a good career. UF doesn’t have an IT program, so I thought that this was the closest comparison to the schools’ computer programs.
I like the practical idea of IT more, and feel that CS is too much math/theory. I realize that some theory is important though. Plus, a lot of CS majors get into IT anyways.
Also, I’ve been considering IIT-Chicago (ITM) and Purdue-WL (CIT) for IT majors.
What would u think is the average starting salary of a UCF IT major? It would probably be less than CS, but would it be above 65k at least?
