During my freshman year, my dad go into a car accident and hurt his back. His back injury shortened the hours that he could work and eventually his business started to lose money. He was forced to sell his practice, we went bankrupt, and we lost our house. He was able to get a state job relative quickly so we were never out on the street, but during my sophomore and junior year I was really stressed out. We had pretty much no spending money, and sometimes towards the end of the month we had no money. My family is doing better now and so are my grades (4.75 first semester senior year.) I chose to leave this out of my UC application because it's pretty embarrassing to say that your family went bankrupt. Now that I got rejected from UCI, I was wondering if this might help if I appeal? (UC GPA is 3.7, SAT 1860, ACT 28)

I would definitely try at least. There’s no harm in appealing right?

Anyways, I’m glad to hear you and your family are doing better

If you don’t mind, what major and alt major did you apply for?

YES, APPEAL.

i understand about the bankruptcy thing and a father who can’t work. though our stories are so much different, i know how much it can affect a person (socially, academically, mentally, etc.)… i included my similar story as the actual personal statement–our stats are quite similar (mine are a bit worse)–and i got in ~february 8th (just 2.5 weeks after uci notified me about receiving my application…). it was most likely a valid explanation for my upward trend in grades. so please, please appeal if you want to attend uci!!

and great job on improving your grades YOU GOT THIS!!!

Go ahead and try but I doubt it’ll be successful…not that you are a poor applicant. IMO you are very qualified and you have a good reason to appeal…however…it seems that UCI is short on spaces this year…again. If you go look at last year’s appeal decisions and waitlist threads they’re mostly ridden with rejections :(

Thanks for the replies. I think I’m going to try to appeal. On the UCI website, it says that letters of recommendation are not required, but should I still have some of my current teachers write me recommendations? O and btw I applied for Biology.
