I have a unique economic situation in my family that would make it reasonable to apply for a fee waiver at this time. However, I know these top schools are all about "need blind" admissions. By applying for this fee waiver am I essentially taking off those blindfolds from the admissions office? I fear that I will now be looked at as a student that cannot afford to pay for tuition (which may or may not be true depending on how things go). Please respond asap as I really need to apply to scholarships as well.

It's up to you what you think the colleges will do. Me, myself I would apply (free anything is great). If you don't get in, then it wasn't meant to be anyway, right?

i'm looking for answers regarding the technicality of this. do they send my request to the finaid office or to the admissions office?

Admissions...why would they send it to the financial aid office? Admissions determines who gets in not FA office. Obviously nobody knows or there would have been lots of answers.

I'm sure plenty of people have applied for fee waivers and still got into their first choice with aid. There are a lot more factors involved and is not based upon whether the person requested a fee waiver.

I had this exact issue with Notre Dame... it wasn't that i couldn't pay.... but the bank froze my bank account for some reason that they still will not tell me... and my dad was forced out of his position at work - made paying for stuff a big issue.

So i talked to my counselor at school - i am a transfer but will work for frosh also - she sent an email to the admin counselor at ND and they waived it straight away - Need blind admissions means that they will still be blind regardless of a fee waiver or not... they are obligated if they stipulate a need blind admin to disregard a fee waiver request. I know some kids who's parents make over 300K that were granted fee waivers b/c they were paying for their own college........ so anything can happen

interesting. thanks for the info.
