Should I apply to University of Chicago early action?? WHAT ARE MY CHANCES??

Well here's, yet again, my stats, realistically revised, and requestioned.

Hi,
My name is John Doe and I attend Lathrop High School in Fairbanks, Alaska

Well, i'm looking to enter a top college, right now looking over University of Chicago. The question is, should I apply early action??

Oh yeah, my father is the pastor of my church, that is why I have so many church activities. We attend a rather small church, so it's pretty much just me and my dad running most of it. He teaches the adults and I teach the younger generation. We make pamphlets, bulletins, translate sermons and documents etc. Because the church is so small, and becuase there is no one else really qualified and willing to do what I do, I'm pretty much obligated to be dedicated to the church (not that I don't enjoy it).

Thats about it. If you do say no, can you tell me why? I know I have a rather low GPA and rank, perhaps SAT too. I am planning to take the ACT soon as well; and a semester grade of 4.6 will raise my GPA to 4.01 (weighted, don't know unweighted), which will probably do me no good as dealines are before the end of the semester.
I know I have a rather mediocre application, but I am a very good writer, and plan to write a stellar essay along with great teacher recommendations.
I also live in Alaska ^_^.

I think that you have a great shot at University of Chicago. They are looking for people who are not stereotypical, and you are not. Being a good writer will help, but they will probably be interested in what you read. Obviously, you don't have a lot of time for reading, but be ready to tell them what you read when you do have time. As an alum, it sounds to me as if you will fit in. Early Action is a great idea. You could do Early Decision, but then there would be the risk of not being happy enough with the financial aid package and wishing that you could apply elsewhere.

Its good you're a fine writer because they value their uncommon essays very highly. Shine in your essay and your chances are quite good.

Last year, a girl from our school (PA) got in with around a 1300 SAT and a 3.5 UW GPA. She was an amazing writer (had won about a million essay competitions), which shows you the boost essays can give you.

Any more responses??

bump

please respond...

If you have nothing important to say, just rate my chances of getting in solely based on my stats with a accepted/rejected/detered

One correction to above where soemone suggested the possibility of early decision -- UChicago has only Early Action. UChicago has a daunting application with several essays, which discourages many from applying and is one reason it has a higher admit rate than other very high ranked colleges. Do well on your essays and point out your background. I agree with above that you look like the kind of person UChicago wants to admit. It considers grades and course difficulty as most important factor and essays, personality, and activities as second most important. Test score actually trails those in importance.

actually one of the reasons I will apply RD is because of the essays. I like writing! Which is also part of the reason I'm applying to deep springs as well.

Thats not the only reason but it is something of a plus for me. I would still apply and go there without the uncommon essays but the uncommon essays are a plus for me!
